We're thinking of a vacation in Block Island, R.I. with two small children. Any recommendations for house rentals or hotels? It looks like there are a few ferry departure places. Does anyone know which is most convenient from N.J.? |

Chalmers I have never stayed on BI with children, but have done day trips, and honestly don't recommend it. The sidewalks are so narrow you can't use a stroller. The shops are all up stairs or down the stairs. It just didn't seem very kid friendly. But, we didn't really "investigate" other options for the kids. I have always loved the shopping and restaurants. That said, usually we drive up to RI and take the ferry from Point Judith. I have toured the Adrienne B and B, very nice. (this was several years ago) It is located near the new harbor side of BI |

we've taken the ferry from Montauk (at the eastmost point of long island). It was a long drive to get there. This ferry is only a passenger ferry, if you want to take your car, you probably have go from Port Judith or New London. On one occasion we left block island to ride the ferry back to Montauk. Well, you are giong through LI Sound, so it can get rough. That day the waters were rough, and a wave of sea sickness plagued the boat! It was an interesting chain reaction. I was glad not to be one of the sickly! We didn't have kids when we went, but we enjoyed the island. I know a family who goes with their kids for 2 weeks every year in July and they love it. Their children are 7 and 10. |

Could be great with kids, if you either take your car or rent near the beach. Take the Pt. Judith, RI ferry. If you can't get a car reservation, I believe you can arrive, wait in line for a ferry, and usually catch the second boat after you arrive. If you don't want to take your car, and can take bikes, you can walk on to any ferry; just arrive about 30-45 minutes in advance. We took bikes, had a taxi take our luggage to an inn, and followed with on our bikes. Some taxis also have bike racks; and, you always can rent bikes. Obviously, with little kids, a car would be very convenient. Block Island is remarkably undeveloped, due to land conservancy trusts. There are miles of unspoiled trails, and plenty of tranquility outside of the small shopping district that day-trippers invade. |

My cousin has a house on Block Island that is available for rent. www.piocosta.com/vacations is the website with prices and information about the home. |

Babyturtlelover, $3,500 a week is much, much more than I would want to spend. Thanks anyway. |

Chalmers I don't know if you are interested in just Rhode Island, there are a lot of houses for rent in the Naragassent area or Charlestown. They range from as low as $800.--and up. We go every year and find a great place to stay for the week. You can take the ferry over to Block Island and spend the day. That is always an option. |

We do, this year we went through the owner so it was cheaper. I can't think of the name of the Realtor, my husband is at lunch, when he gets back I'll ask him!! Try going online and looking around Naragansett South Kingston area. What exactly are you looking for? |

http://www.blockisland.com/sunset/ http://www.vamoose.com/search?vID=125 Here are a couple of websites to look at. One of the realtors we have used is Waterfront Properties. They were fairly good at showing us houses, but not so good at getting back to us when we called out of state. |
