A friend wants to getaway next weekend & is thinking that a cruise out of Miami for a few days would do the trick. Any suggestions on good sites for last minute deals & cruises that are less child-oriented than others?

Thanks.

Cruisequick.com is a good one. Also, Vacationstogo.com. They might also want to contact the cruise line directly. Sometimes when cabins aren't booked, they'll offer them at a great price.

If all else fails, just have them come down and we'll put them up

We use cruise411.com.

Only a limited number of lines do 3-4 night cruises, if that is what you are looking for. Unfortunately, most of them do them in their oldest ships, with the smallest staterooms and fewest amenities.

We've tried short cruises twice, as part of visits to family in Florida.

We tried a Carnival cruise, lured by very low rates and the right availability. Never again. The ship was astoundingly tacky, and somewhat shopworn. The whole experience felt like slumming (don't get me started on our assigned tablemates...).

A number of other middle market lines also use their older ships in these cruises, but based on the ship descriptions, we aren't likely to try them (old ships, very small cabins).

Even for adults, my choice for 3-4 night cruises would actually be Disney Cruiselines (with caveats listed below). They are a bit pricier than some, but run lovely new ships, with large cabins. The decor is actually fairly tasteful (mock art deco or nouveau with Disney motifs). Book as many dinners as you can get in the adults-only restaurant, which is well worth the surcharge. Swim or sunbath at the adults-only pool, use the adults-only beach on the private island.

Don't do the Disney cruise, however, if you want a casino, non-disney shows, or vibrant nightlife. There is an adults-only nightclub zone, but it was generally nearly deserted.

So it all depends on what you are looking for...

We did a Royal Carribean cruise some years back. It was fantastic, definitely more adult oriented (not porn)

Sister and BIL are headed out tomorrow on a 3 or 4 day cruise on the Queen Mary 2(?) - leaving out of Manhattan. Maybe there are last minute cabin availabilities?

Let us know how they like the QM2!

I've used Cruise411.com before, and have booked two cruises with them before. They are good although their web site is not ideal for navigating around and working on multiple scenarios.

There is good info available, easily navigated, at icruise.com.

The last cruise we took, I booked through vacationstogo.com. The agent we used was very responsive to our needs, returned our calls very promptly, and in general provided excellent service via phone and e-mail.
