After spending July 4th at home, my wife and I have decided to try and get out of the area for this weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good weekend away? We'll be driving, so anywhere in a 4-hour radius is ok... So far I've been thinking about Cape Code, Brandywine, and Dutch Country PA. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Try Brandywine Valley, Berkshires, or Connecticut River Valley, Philadelphia, or Manhattan. Slightly longer: Block Island, Adirondacks, southern Vermont. |

Cape Cod is beyond your 4 hr. time frame - try Newport, RI |

Hey guys - thanks for all your suggestions. In the end we have decided to go to the Brandywine Valley, and pay a visit to Longwood Gardens and the Winterthur estate. Anything else worth a visit while we're down there? |

If you can get a reservation, go to Niemours. It's another DuPont estate, with very limited access. Also, check out the Brandywine Museum, which everyone refers to as the "Andrew Wyeth Museum" because of its incredible collection. It's a very quaint set-up. In searching for good food, also consider Wilmington, which is remarkably nearby. Also highly recommend the Inn at Montchanin Village; it's a wonderful, romantic place that should not be missed -- if you can get a room within your budget. http://www.montchanin.com/

Thanks Two Sense - I had looked into Nemours a while back. It is currently undergoing major renovation, which, I believe, will be completed next year. I think we will leave that for the next visit. Thanks for the heads-up on the museum! |

Just a quick update: we got back a couple of hours ago from a great weekend down in the Brandywine valley. Yesterday we went to Longwood Gardens, which has an amazing collection of outdoor gardens, fountains and conservatories with a wide variety of tropical plants - including some beautiful orchids. Today was a trip to Winterthur, another one of the DuPont estates, which has some fascinating exhibits. Overall a great trip - also with a restaurant recommendation. I bumped into some fellow British expats at a local Starbucks (of all places), who pointed me in the direction of Avalon in West Chester. We went there for a meal on Saturday night, and were very impressed. Great BYOB, if you're ever in that area. Thanks again for the recommendations - I'll be sure to pick one of them for another weekend jaunt! |
