Any Vietnamese restaurant recommendations in this area or elsewhere in northern NJ? For example, I passed a place in Montclair, but know nothing about it.

I found two on Zagat.com

Saigon R (Saigon Republic)
58 W. Palisade Ave.
(William St.)
Englewood, NJ 07631
201-871-4777
www.saigonr.com
Food Decor Service Cost
24 10 20 $25
Review

It’s a “real hole-in-the-wall”, but since “everything is sumptuous, savory, tender and exquisitely prepared”, Englewood’s denizens are quick to forgive the “bare-bones” shortcomings of this Vietnamese BYO; it’s “tight” in there, so “squeeze in” and witness some slurping of “exceptional” pho and servers who don’t “rush” diners, “even on a busy night.”

Bien Hoa
2090 Rte. 27
(Talmadge Rd.)
Edison, NJ 08817
732-287-9500
Food Decor Service Cost
21 9 18 $15
Though not a sight for sore eyes, this “small” Vietnamese BYO in an Edison strip mall is the “only place to go” “when you crave pho”; pho-ponents and others in search of “something a little different” are also content with “cheap” prices that make the “tasty” offerings even more enticing.

We go back to Jersey City, to a restauraunt on Newark Ave. The name changes every so often. Good place, we used to go every week.

I was told that the place in Montclair (on Grove street?) is the same Vietnamese restaurant that used to be in Nutley - Little Saigon? We ate at the one in Nutley once, but were not impressed with the flavors.

My experience with Vietnamese food has to be qualified though -- Vietnamese food from other Asian countries which we really enjoyed, not Vietnam or from someone's real Vietnamese home kitchen. I'm still looking for a good Vietnamese restaurant, too.

I loved the place in Nutley. Great prices, great portions and great food. Unfortunately it burned to the ground.
I'll have to check out the new place in Montclair.

Two Sense,

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a decent Vietnamese restaurant in NJ. The best VN food I have had on the East Coast is my wife's kitchen. I had the good fortune of growing up eating wonderful food from sidewalk vendors in Saigon then great restaurants in the So. Cal. and San Jose areas. Thus, I have to admit that I'm a bit spoiled.

Most of the VN food I experienced on the East Coast, with the exception of one restaurant in Tampa, FL, have been disasters. I just hate paying for food that can't be made better than what I can get at home.

However, if you get into NYC, I recommend Nha Trang Restaurant, 87 Baxter St, New York, NY. The canh chua and ca kho are real decent. The pho isn't bad either.

SaigonGuy --

Would you care to share a recipe for pho bac? We recently had a cooking session at Cent'Anni, which hatched out of a thread similar to this one. I'm wondering whether we can do Vietnamese/Asian next time!

There's a decent Vietnamese take-out place on Rt 10 inside Kam Man; they make a very tasty pho bac.

Wilkanoid,

I can't cook to save my life. My wife does the pho in our house. Let me ask her if she would be interested in a cooking session at Cent'Anni. We have young children.

What is Cent'Anni's schedule like?

They are closed on Mondays. The owner, Chris Farrow, charged us a mere $10 to use the kitchen. He said he enjoyed this Monday's event as much as we did.

I don't want to get ahead of myself (and especially, not Chris). Just exploring possibilities at this point.

If your wife is up for something like this though, it would be fun to try to get it together. In the last cooking session, we had five people make five different things. I brought me 2 kids with me -- there was an assortment of 5-6 year olds, an infant, and a 9-year old.

Wilkanoid,

My wife loves to make pho. She's very critical of herself and almost always cooks it overnight so the flavors set in. She orders her spices from an organic coop in CA so her soup is fragrant. On occasions when we eat it on the same day, she starts the broth in the morning.

With the schedule at Cent'Anni, we may not be able to make the best pho. Again, I'll ask her if she would be interested. If so, maybe she can do some prep before we go there. In the alternative, she can make it and we'll have you Chris and Two Sense over. We have a nice patio with a good long table.

As for my kids, I have a 5 yr. old, a 2 and new-born. The 2 yr. old is going through terrible twos right so I would have to figure something out if we go to Cent'Anni.

SaigonGuy --

If you feed me, I will come. As will Mr. W and the mini-noids.

Having two kids who have had more than their share of 'moments', I am pretty tolerant of screaming two year olds. Of course, they are best tolerated in open space.

Dave, is Kam Man the Asian grocery just past Home Depot? I had lunch at a Vietnamese take-out place in the far right stall.

Wilkanoid,

You're on. I have a busy week coming up but how about Sun., July 24. We can have pho for brunch, weather permitting, of course. However, we may not want to have pho if it's 80+ degrees out with humidity.

My husband is taking my older kid to sleepaway camp that weekend and won't be back until the evening, but I can certainly bring the 5-year old with me. She's very shy and may be stuck to me the whole time, but I don't mind if you don't. I guess Mr. W will just have to hear about the pho from me!

I'll PL you with my contact info.

Cent'Anni is on Highland Place, downtown. Leo's nails is on that corner. Turn there, and it's on the same side of the street as Leo's.

Kam Man is on Route 10W, in East Hanover. It's in the same shopping complex/strip as Annie Sez. You can also access it via the Home Depot parking lot there. It's the store on the end, facing the HD landscaping section. You can't miss it.
