Taking the kids there for a week in August. We plan to do a lot of fishing, hiking, and general horsing around. Any suggestions of good fishing to do, or hikes, or other attractions? Much appreciated. |

We'll be there the first week of August, for our 8th year, we love it!! Fort Ticonderoga is cool, the boats that go up the lake are ok, but the long trip may be too much for the kids. I think there are water falls around somewhere, but we just hang out and sail. There's lots of info, esp. on the internet. Where ae you staying? |

Frodo -- On the fishing, it may be a bit tough in August. The lake is loaded with smallies, but they tend to go deep in August and stay there until fall. Will you be fishing from a boat? If so, and your kids are old enough, you could fish the islands in the Narrows. Just about every island has a rocky drop off that holds fish. But wind and boat traffic can make it tough. You could also work the banks from the Narrows all the way up to Mother Bunch Group. You'll find clamer water in the coves along the banks. Hit the east bank of the lake in the early AM, the west in the afternoon. And by afternoon, I mean about 4 or 5 pm. The heat, clear water and mid-day sun make noon till 4 or so the perfect time for a break, since the fishing tends to slow down then. If you do get a chance to be out on a boat (all the marinas rent them -- try Norowal in Bolton Landing (http://www.norowalmarina.com/)), there's a great place for cliff jumping at West Dollar Island. You'll see boats stopping by there throughout the day. You can also cruise up to the Mother Bunch Group and swim among the islands. It's lots of fun. One place in particular is the southern tip of Mother Bunch Island. You can float the current between Mother Bunch and St. Sacrament. Here's a map that'll help you locate the islands I'm talking about: http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/usa/ny/narr/newindex.html

I don't know the resort. We stayed in Bolton Landing at Carey's Motel for years when the kids were young-nice beach and other kids. We rent a house on the eastern basin now...own dock, quiet, swimming, lounging. Boy I can't wait. As for fishing-my brother fishes a lot when we go up, he rents from Chic's in Bolton. He doesn't catch much usually, although my husband caught a big bass or something with his fly rod 2 years ago from the sailboat. I talked him into letting the beautiful thing make more fish. There's the amusement park, by the village, but we've never gone. Also, outlet shopping if you're so inclined. Enjoy!!! |
