Is there such a thing not too far? I'm thinking a place I can take them one afternoon after camp, maybe the bay side of Sandy Hook? Any other options? I'm not interested in staying overnight, just taking a little excursion for the afternoon. |

Round Valley is perfect for kids. It's about 40 minutes away in Lebanon. Just go west on rt. 80. There's a big beach, concession stands, and clear, clean water. More info here: http://www.njskylands.com/pkrndval.htm and here: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/round.html

I think you are on the mark with Sandy Hook. With the trails and the outdoor programs and conservation stuff they have there, its perfect and not far at all. |

Oooh, thanks. I have heard good things about Avon by the Sea, and Skylands sounds great too. Will put all 3 places on our list. |

There's parking all over the place... up along the boardwalk, up and down Main Street, and on any street. If you go, stop at Nagel's for an old timey ice cream... |

Hank, I don't think I've ever been to either! Though I did my fair share of romping in the sand and under the boardwalk at South Beach! Hey, last weekend I went to Denino's and Ralph's and lemme tell you...it was damngood! I don't think I ever realized how delish that pizza is! My kids loved it. |

Im jealous...practically weepy...since Im from South Beach. Oh, you thought I meant jealous about Denino's and Ralph's? OK..that too. Denino's blows away all the local bar pizza choices. I may have to have another Maplewood reverse-Fresh Air Fund trip and bring some pals to an SI Yankees game with the Denino's-Ralph's post-game...fuhgeddabodit!

shh-Ocean Grove is exit 100a or B on the parkway...follow the signs from there... I second Avon by the Sea...my children grew up at that beach and, because of the natural cove that a jetty creates, such a nice place for little ones to swim without being knocked down by big waves...clean family beach.. |

IF you aren't committed to salt water I have a great suggestion. Google directions for the NJ Botanical Garden. It is up north near the NY state border. On the grounds is also state park with a lovely sandy lake that has had all the goopy lake stuff scooped out and it is ideal for kids (there are life guards too) My 9 and 6 year old and younger nieces and nephews love swimming there. There is a concessions stand bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, bbqs, a play ground, fishing, boat, canoe, and I think kayak rentals, lots of trails and, it is next to the Botanical garden which is housed on the grounds of a lovely estate from which you can just make outthe Hudson River. It costs $10 per car to get in. Really one of the little known hidden gems of the state. |

Thanks. I think I'm going to go today, this afternoon, for a few hours so I'm going to try and find the closest place. I actually prefer non-salt water! Sounds great. |

Does any of these places rent umbrellas? We would like to go this weekend (without child). But hate lugging an umbrella (not to mention we don't even own one. Thanks! |

shh. Did you like Round Valley? Georgie: Round Valley doesn't rent umbrellas, but they have great sites for barbecues, with tables and elevated sort of fireplaces for cookouts, all with a nice view. Thing is, weekends will be crowded. I recommend getting there early, to get a good picnic site, with lots of shade!!! |

Round Valley certainly DID rent umbrellas. Chairs too! I liked it well enough. The bathroom situation (by the beach area) was not the greatest, but hey, it's a huge swimming hole. I can only imagine how many little kids pee in the water, so if mine did too... . Next time I'd bring a little porta-potty for the kids, just in case. The clientele was mostly non-English speaking, but it was very family oriented. I don't know about weekends, but during the week it was fairly quiet. |

Well, good!! When my kids were little, Round Valley was pretty quiet during the week, as well, and didn't rent umbrellas. I am glad they now do. See if you like Oxford Furnace Lake, in Oxford. Take route 31 north to Oxford, and turn left at Shippen Manor. Follow that road for about four miles or so. You'll see the lake. It's small, deep and cool. Not so crowded.
