What's the source for the list and where is Guinness or John Courage? I'm guessing it's bottled beverages only.

Hhmm, so in this list are breweries from:
England, Canada, Belgium and lot's from the US.
I think there are a lot missing from other countries.
And what's up with 41. They make some bad brews, honestly.

The source is a Money magazine article. The ranking is from a recent survey conducted by the Web site, RateBeer.com.

Guiness is one of my personal favorites. I'm just as surprised as you are that it's not on there.

Agree with Earlster. No way not one German, Austrian or Czech beer, for example, makes the list. Way to many USA beers.

I'm not agreeing completely with the list. However, I believe that many of the survey participants are Americans with easier access to US beers. In addition, it seems like the list if primarily of small crafted brewers.

I always have to laugh at lists like this. Not because those brewers aren't great, but because none of the best selling most popular brewers are ever on these lists. For instance: Bud. As far as the US goes, Bud is probably the #1 best selling most popular beer brewer. But when was the last time you saw bud on top of a list of best brewers.

As far as beer is concerned, I always have to place beers in three categories; dark, medium, and light. And for me that means Guinness, Bass, and Boddingtons. MMM.... delicious. Although this list does have a few honorable mentions.

Mayor, when was the last time you saw Mc Donalds on a list of best foods?

Oopps, I missed that Ayinger is on there, but then that's not the best German brewer anyway.

Kudos to who mentioned River Horse in Lambertville and another plug to Old Shipyard Ale from Kennebunkport, Maine - I think I need me a beer right NOW!!

Triumph is on this list while Gordon Biersch is omitted?

I won't go so far as Earlster in saying they're "bad", but they ain't world class. Gordon Biersch runs a wonderful chain of brewpubs out west, with a few locations elsewhere in the country. I know they are not going to buy out Gaslight and set up shop here, but a guy can dream, can't he?

I have to backup McCheese here (to a point). Even if you think that Bud is the "McD's" of Beer, I submit that there are nevertheless several other successful brewers that make excellent beer.

For instance, having tried many many beers over the years, I still find that the Samuel Adams family of brews has several EXCELLENT choices, my favorite among them is Boston Ale (coming close behind are their various seasonal brews, esp. the one that comes out each winter). Yuengling, too, I think is a very good beer (albeit not among my absolute favorites). I think this is akin to the snobbery that affects other areas of our culture, where it is thought somehow that if too many people like something, it must be unremarkable and unworthy of special praise. Odd phenomenon, wouldn't you say?

Agreed on Sam Adams.

Budweiser's success has more to do with a marketing machine than taste excellence. If a brewer makes it big because they taste good, I'm all for that. That doesn't apply to Bud or Miller, IMHO.

I was never able to figure that one out. It must be the marketing because I really don't like Bud at all and only drink it if it's the only thing available. And even then I don't drink much of it.

I don't think Miller tastes like much of anything. I like it on a on a hot day because it tastes like water

So long as we're talking about the "Big Three" American beers, I have to say that, every once in a while, a Coors original (in the yellow label) is pretty good. But maybe its just me.
