Next month I am renting a house in Corolla, NC for a week. I've never been to the Outer Banks before and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or helpful hints about restaurants, shopping, recreation, getting around, etc. Many thanks.

Oh we go every 2 years with our extended family.

There are beaches you can rent an ATV on and look for the wild horses. LOADS of fun. There are TONS of great restaurants. My favorites are Awful Arthurs (best seafood ever) and Chili Peppers. There is a Sonic drive in there (hey thats a treat for me - we don't have them here) The shops in Duck are a pretty afternoon diversion. The Wright Brothers memorial is there and you can do some hanggliding if you are feeling adventurous!

We've gone every year with our extended family for a number of years. We rent in Duck. Ditto on the Duck Shops.. especially if you end up with a rainy day. You can also take a "nature-type" canoe excursion. Duck Deli has great crab cakes. If you're up for a drive, about 1/2-3/4 hour south take the causeway into Manteo to The Weeping Radish brewery.. best beer we've ever had! Nice Bavarian food too. Jet ski rentals are right at the Causeway.

We drive into Norfolk via the Cheasapeke Bay Bridge Tunnel from MD's eastern shore instead of taking 95 - highly recommend this route.

We haven't been there in 6 or 7 years, but we used to go to the Rundown Cafe in Kitty Hawk. Good casual restaurant with jerk chicken and other Jamaican influenced dishes. Also a kids' menu, and a mini golf course next door. Used to have live entertainment in the evening, including a Blues Nite. Don't know if they still do that, but it was pretty cool.

There were plenty of places with fresh seafood of course. Happy Hour at a raw bar can't be beat.

Have fun!

We just got back from a week in Corolla. I have been going to the Outer Banks for many, many years. In that time it has changed greatly.

It all depends on what you want to do during the week, but one thing to remember is Corolla is near the end of the road, and there is only one two lane road going North/South in that section. When it rains everyone has the same idea and heads for the shops and creates a traffic jam on the road and in the shops. So it may be a good idea to save the shopping for an evening or a really hot afternoon.

We pretty much sit on the beach all day, and then go shopping or out to eat one or two evenings. There is lots of shopping at Timbuktu, which is across from the Food Lion. Groupers is very good, but on the expensive side, and North Bank Grill (or something like that) has great seafood and a nice bar, but is small. The Blue Point Grill in Duck is fantastic, but very hard to get into.

I love the shops in Old Corolla, near the Lighthouse. There is a fantastic bookstore, and some other cute shops in old, renovated buildings. There is also a good take-out BBQ place there.

While you are sitting on the beach keep in eye out for the dolphins - we saw them go up and down the coast several times a day, every day we were there.

dal - sweet tomatoy BBQ or vinagery red sauce BBQ? Sweet cole slaw? Hush puppys? Hard to find a good hush puppy north of Hatteras.

Just came back from a week in Corolla. Have to say we were generally disappointed with restaurants. Tried 3 barbecue places; only one to recommend is NC Barbecue, a
'shack' type take-out place (picnic tables outside) in Corolla Village shopping center with great baked beans, good pulled pork and biscuits. Thought Groupers was ok, overpriced. Avoid Sunset Grill (popular and crowded, outside setting had mediocre food and too expensive for casual, paper plates setting). Best meal we had was lunch at Mexican restaurant (Don Gatos?) on Beach Road 12 in Kill Devil Hills, Milepost 11.5 (?). Took out from Steamers (seafood takeout only in TimBuck II shopping center), very good.

Corolla is a solid 25 - 30 minute ride from end of the island where you come in on bridge. Kill Devil Kills, Nags Head etc (where some of the restaurants recommended above are located) are not close for dinner.

If you come in on Saturday, be aware that grocery shopping at Food Lion in Corolla (one of only 2 grocery stores on island) is a NIGHTMARE (we came in Friday and lucked out). Stopped in for one or two things we forgot and promptly departed: I've never seen lines like that! We heard it was the highest grossing Food Lion in the US! If you are a Saturday arrival, I'd suggest bringing all staples from home, and perhaps shopping right before you get onto the island.

If your house isn't oceanfront (we were in Currituck Club) you might want to rent chairs and/or umbrellas at beack to avoid dragging them back and forth. It was worth the tips to have Resort Services haul our rented umbrella (and even our beach chairs) in their cart down 4 - 5 houses away from the crowds!

Feel free to PL me if you have specific questions.

The best restaurant in the Outer Banks is Elizabeth's

It's expensive and not for kids. Comparable to Scalini Fedeli in Chatham or Stage Coach in Scotch Plains.
