We went many years ago - stopped for 1 day and a night enroute from camping near Assategue and on the way to Williamsberg. We caught the Mets AAA team - fun (used to be called the Tidewater Tides), went to the wonderful maritime museum there with its own IMAX theatre and that's about it. I think the next day we were hit with the tail end of a hurricane. Can't remember where we ate.

I highly recommend Lynnhaven Fish House

http://www.lynnhavenfishhouse.net/

Haven't been there in a while, but the 3 or so times we have dined there were excellent. I'd say Legal Sea Foods would be a good comparator--if Legal were on the water and had darker decor.

It's right on the water, a little east of the end of the bridge-tunnel, on the road to Virginia Beach. The link above has directions.

Check out the No Frill Grill in the Ghent section of Norfolk, and now in VaBeach.

Also, biking and kayaking in the state park in-land at the northern end of VaBeach is fun. The VaBeach boardwalk and beach are good. And, the Norfolk botanical garden is wonderful -- near the airport, and includes a birds-eye view of the runway, which captivates kids (and adults).
