I am losing my mind and need a vacation. October seems a good time. I thought about the Carribean, but life has been dramatic enough lately, so that's out. Continental US best, since it will only cost me 50k frequent flier miles for two tix. Any thoughts? |

Vermont? It might be peaceful there, between the summer and ski seasons. But I don't think Continental will take you there. Or how about France!

Mmmmm.... the kind of sun where I can lay in it & go in a pool. I can get 1st class seats on Continental to Phoenix the last week of September. I'm thinking a resort in Scottsdale & a couple days on the road? Grand Canyon? Alg- I hate Vegas, so I'm allergic to going there. Any thoughts on less-expensive resort/ kissing hotels in Phoenix/Scottsdale? Is the GC a day trip? I've been there on business several times & always intended to go back for vacation. I priced out the cost of the resorts I've stayed at on business trips. Yikes! I'm not finding their rate! |

My first thought was Austin. But, I don't want to chance being anywhere near the hurricane belt. That rules out New Orleans, too. Both, BTW, places that TS wants to go. |

Well... if you can splurge or get a deal I recommend the Four Seasons at Troon North or Sanctuary at Camelback which has a great spa. I did a site inspection this winter at the Biltmore and I wasn't impressed at all. The Hyatt Gainey Ranch is an ok hotel and you can usually get a good deal. The Four Seasons has some time shares attached - I'm not sure how you might go about renting those but they might be less than the hotel. The most important thing is to have a pool boy - Oh pool boy another margarita please! |

Eliz- thanks for the reminder. I just sent an e-mail shamelessly calling in a favor for a rate hook-up at the Ritz. I stayed at the 4 Seasons Troon once & would love to go back there. I don't think it's in the budget, tho. Do you know anything about the R-C in Phoenix? |

Sorry I don't know anything about the RC but how bad can it be if you get a good rate? You can always call Troon and say you are considering a time share and what's the best rate they can offer while you try it out for a week.... |

I vote for Vegas. Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam, not to mention great shows and fine restaurants. Nickel slots are fun and you can play for hours on a few bucks. Packages available too. |

Scottsdale is aweseme. For something even more peaceful check out Sedona. Not quite as warm though. GC is more of a day trip from Sedona, it is a hike from Scottsdale. We stayed at The Boulders, which is in Carefree just north of Scottsdale. It was awesome. Not cheap though. In Sedona we stayed at a pretty lame B&B, but there are nice resorts in the area. In Phoenix I have heard The Phoenecian is great (again, not cheap). |

Sedona is BEAUTIFUL, very peaceful. If you go to Phoenix, there is plenty to do, many great restaurants. A day trip to Mexico where you can do a lot of shopping, you find great deals in Nogales. |

OK - the frequent flier gods and the hotel hook-up gods seem to be converging on a week at the Ritz in Vegas. It's 40 minutes off the Strip, so I think I'll survive. What's to do in the area if one hates the Strip? |

I am not a "Vegas" person. We rented a convertible and drove to the Hoover Dam and Red Rocks Canyon. My boss went to a meeting out in Mt Zion Nat'l Park (Utah) and I flew her into Vegas -- she said it was fabulously beautiful -- maybe take a day at the end of your trip and explore that area? I'm dying to see the parks in Utah. Take a boat out on Lake Mead? |

Hoover Dam is cool and it's a nice drive/day trip. Vegas is now restaurant city - pick up the current issue of Bon Appetit which has a bunch of restaurant suggestions. You can also do Grand Canyon flight tours. |

Waiting for the hotel gods to get back to me.... my hold on the Vegas flights expires tonight at midnight, so I'm crossing my fingers! When I asked/told my boss yesterday that I wanted to take 5 days in September, I got a rousing "do what you need to do". That's a "yes". The beauty of my job is that my VP is an impossible to please nut job. So, since I can't do anything right, I may as well do what I want. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm starting to get psyched about the Hooever Dam, Grand Canyon, Red Rocks, etc. |

Hoover Dam is really cool, but you can't go inside for the tour since 9/11. |

Greentree- We were in Vegas in May. Never went to the strip once. (We stayed off the strip in the Summerlin section of the town). Got to Mt Charleston...it is so neat...it was 95 in Vegas and 40 when we got to the top of Charleston and it started to snow while we were up there!!!! We went to RedRock Canyon, we went to Lake Meade for a day...absolutely gorgeous. You can also get to the the Grand Canyon somehow...we did go to the old strip during one afternoon to see where they play the world series of poker...(Binion's). My husband wanted to see that. We had a great time...perfect 5 day trip for us ...and October is perfect weather to pool sit! Hope you get to go!

Greenetree - I can't recommend this highly enough - Bermuda. If you plan when there's no hurricane threat and you don't mind spending a little more, it's the most theraputic, beautiful place that's only a little over an hour by plane. I have been going there for long weekends for the last ten years and I never had a bad experience. Elbow Beach is beautiful and peaceful, and is a short bus ride from Hamilton or St. George for shopping (ugh - I hate shopping) and dinner, and the people are great. If you want to be closer to town the Hamilton Princess is really nice too. Go ahead - you deserve it. I'll be there in November for the rugby. |

BTW Greenetree - There are cheaper places to stay - the hotels I mentioned are when a bunch of us fly down and do a share. Hmmm - an MOL girls weekend in Bermuda? |
