Not sure this question fall into this category, but I'm looking for reasonably priced swimming lessons for my 7 3/4 year old this fall. Any ideas??

We go to The Connection which is fine. We do group lessons but they give private as well. My kids are much younger than yours though. I would say that they do not push the kids, which can be good or bad depending on what you want.

The Y gives lessons at Columbia HS pool. I've heard mixed reviews (again for younger ages).

I've heard GREAT things about Kristie's School of Fish. I took my oldest there for a trial run and loved it. It is pricey though and not that close. If I had the money and the time I would have gone there.

Thanks for the feedback. My son can be a little lazy so I'd like for the instructor to pay attention and not just let him coast. He's turing out to be a pretty good swimmer so my husband I figured we should encourage him. Plus its the only sport he is even remotely interested in.

I'll check out the websites and see how it goes. thanks again. Hope they offer weekends and evening because I work! Have a good one :-)

Lessons at the JCC in W. Orange are great IMO. My kids, now 4 & 6, both learned to swim there and are working on front crawl stroke technic. Both Barbara and Mario are excellent. They let the kids know fun is good, but they don't let the kids coast or waste class time. (To the rare point of putting an unruly/disruptive student on the side to sit for a minute, which usually results in cooperation for the rest of the lesson.) It is most economical if you have and use a family membership, but you can just join a child for lessons, and it is still reasonable if you use the kid's membership for other classes too. (FYI, don't have to be Jewish to join.) Good luck!

The JCC in Scotch Plains is awesome, as is the Summit Y.

My children have taken lessons at both the Jcc in West Orange and at the Summit Y. They are older now so this is some time ago-- If they take group lessons I suggest you watch to make sure all children get needed attention.

I recommend the private swimming lessons at the Y. I think it's $30/half hour and a min. of a block of 4 lessons. There's nothing like one-on-one.

CWalk --

If the kid is interested in swimming as a sport, sign up at the Summit Y. Reg was this Monday, you can always check for openings. Depending on how good your son is, you could work your way up to the Seal Pups (prep course for competitive swimming with the Summit Seals). If you have no time for competition but are interested in competitive training (includinging mastery of strokes), you could switch over to the Intramurals when he's old enough. Best way is to call the Summit Y, and find out what day/time the course you're interested in is running and you can observe.
