How long? Inside or outside the US? I would look at a trip down to the Caribbean to escape the winter weather! Nassau, Paradise Island, Barbados (and others) should all be within your budget for a short trip. In fact, yesterday evening I saw an advert for USA3000 stating that they are starting direct flights from Newark to Nassau - starting at around ~$250 including tax. |

You can rent a house in the Bahama out islands for much less than a resort. Of course it's not the resort experience, it's quiet and private. There's a lot of websites for vacation rental properties. We went with the house to save money and we're not really resort people, but a nice spa weekend would be really great right now. We were there for two weeks in Oct two years ago, and it was heaven!!! Stunning beaches and lovely people. |

Vieques, Vieques, Vieques. http://www.elenas-vieques.com/ http://enchanted-isle.com/ Hurry and book now, and make sure to rent a 4-wheel drive! It's the most incredible place and I cannot wait to get back. I stayed at Bananas (not by design) and it was fine. A bit noisy if you're close to the bar area, but the air conditioner really provided enough white noise that it wasn't a problem. I loved staying in Esperanza, right across from the Malecon. Beautiful, beautiful island. My favorite beach is Green Beach, but you have to drive all the way in to the furthest south (westish) point (you'll know what I mean when you get there). You can get airfare around $200+ R/T to San Juan, then about $90 R/T to Vieques (fun flight!). Lodging at Bananas was $75/night, no meals, but there is plenty of good and reasonable food available, as well as fancier places when the mood strikes. There are lots of discussions on fodor's and other travel boards if you'd like other opinions. Seriously, this is my place. Don't tell anyone!
(Malecon, Esperanza, across the street from Bananas, and it was my birthday!) |

The Bahamas aren't that warm in the winter - I was there one Thanksgiving and it was too cool for the beach. It was warmer than here, but not summery. Aruba and Bonaire are nice, because they are so close to the Equator that their climate it pretty constant year-round. |

It's kind of a haul, but we go to Cabo in Mexico every March and it's lovely, and some of the resorts are pretty cheap. Costco even had deals for the resort we go to: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=10028535&whse=BC&topnav=&c at=2519&hierPath=1133*2519* |

My boyfriend said he didn't want to go to mexico. Me, I was open to the idea. Did not know that about the bahamas. Will definitely keep that in mind. Aruba and Bonaire - I've never heard of Bonaire. It is a small island? |

Dominican seems very reasonable compared to other carribean islands. Lots of all-inclusives there too. |

Love the Dominican.. definitely some great prices for all inclusives if you look around. Enjoy your vacation TK!!! My brother and his gf did the long distance thing for about 9 years and just got engaged... get aways together were definitely fun for them (they also went to Punta Cana in the Dominican and loved it) |

I'm making the assumption you'd want to do something exotic and different, so I will suggest both Portugal and the island of Madeira, part of Portugal. Mild temperatures in winter: Madeira is a floating garden. You pretty much have to get there from Portugal, however, or on a charter flight from the UK or France. If you have the time, it beats the touristy Caribbean to a pulp. IMHO. |

Your assumption is right! Unfortunately this trip we won't have the time - but I have always wanted to go to portugal... |
