Doe anyone have recommendations for a place to get a bite to eat near the Garden that is not fast food and is not prohibitive in $$. A friend and I are going to see my old heart trob, Neil Diamond next Friday and will go in to the city early enough to have supper before the show. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Barbara |

I am always in that area because many of my life-long friends live around there... Tic Toc Diner - pretty good but it's diner food on 34 and 8th. There is also another diner along 8th. One block down from Tic Toc on the west side of the street. From the outside it looks like a nice restaurant because it's wood with lots of glass. Good food but still a diner. Play By Play - Inside the Garden - kind of a TGIF thing Mustang Harry's- 7th Avenue and 29th Street Mustang Sally's - 7th Avenue and 28th Street Stage Door Deli - Corner of 8th Avenue and 33rd Street Nick and Stef's Steak House - 9 Pennsylvania Plaza (33rd Street b/w 7th and 8th Avenues) Tupelo Grill - One Penn Plaza (33rd Street b/w 7th and 8th Avenues) Ben's Kosher Delicatessen - West 38th Street Good one mate...

Murano Italian Restaurant- 201 West 36th, just a couple of blocks up from the garden. Fairly good wine list, not overly ambitious, polite service, very nice cuisine that is good value for the money. |

We went to a place called SEVEN before U2 in May. Seventh ave between 29th and 30th. Not bad , a bit more upscale . It was packed , so I would suggest reservations. |

There is a place called the Harp Bar that I always suggest when in the area of MSG. I have only had apps. at the bar, but they were pretty good and the overall menu looked decent too. I believe it's right on 33rd (if not, then it's definitely 32nd) between 6th and 7th. |

Go to Daniella at 6 if you can, they have a good reasonable wine list and I recall have some 1/2 bottles (I like to have 1/2 white w/ first course and 1/2 red w/ 2nd or vv)...I know we have so much Italian around here but this is not run-of-the-mill. The food is quite varied and cleanly prepared. I really think you'll like it and I hope you'll go--definitely reserve. Disclaimer: No ownership or even friendship involved (!)...been there about 5-6 times, good every time. Give my best to Neil. David |

Ive usually allowed for a little extra time and gone to Chelsea or the Flat Iron District then walked back up to the Garden because there arent alot of great choices (although Artisenal isnt all that far away or i Trulli with the great wine bar next door)...just read about this place though...I'll check it out if Im looking for near the Garden spots to eat in the future because Ive liked his other restaurants.... Waldy's Wood Fired Pizza and Penne 800 Sixth Ave., nr. 27th St.; 212-213-5042 Just when we thought local pizzaiuoli had done everything in their power to piss off the Vera Pizza Napoletana—that irksome Italian trade group whose goal in life is to determine what can and cannot be called a pizza—along comes this pie joint from Beacon’s Waldy Malouf. With a veteran chef’s confident hand, he tops his oval pizzas with ingredients a lesser pieman and the VPN wouldn’t dream of: luscious braised lamb with roasted lemon and oregano. Arugula, garlic, and sunny-side-up eggs. Or clams, bread crumbs, and ricotta. There are salads and shamelessly rich baked pasta dishes to round out the menu, and some decent wine, not to mention an herb planter and scissors for do-it-yourself snipping and seasoning. And while some pizzerias are known as much for their cannoli or spumoni as for their pizza, Waldy’s might follow suit with its Valrhona-chocolate eclipse, an irresistible little concoction that tastes like a rehabilitated Hostess Ho Ho.

Forgot to mention any number of very good Korean restaurants on 32 and 33 between 5th and 6th. Adds a little exoticism to the neighborhood. |

Forgot about Korean and tried a new place yesterday sort of a hybrid korean/chinese joint called Kum Ryong (30 West 32, has Golden Dragon as a "translation"?) Not big on atmosphere but tried something new to me and REALLY yummy called....drumroll, please: Noodles with Brown Sauce--$6.50. Actually my friend had that and I splurged for Noodles with Special Brown Sauce for $6.95. In both cases a pretty big bowl of toothsome noodles with a thick brown sauce with lots of onions and some pork and other yumminess. For the extra .45 I got noodles in one bowl with handful of shredded cuke on top and separate bowl w/ sauce, friend got no cuke, one bowl. I will be back. Yes, to try Noodles with Sea Food Brown Sauce-$7.95. You can spend lots more here if you want, and menu is most amusing. It is really worth a try. Cho Dang Gol on 35th between 5 & 6 is also wonderful, prettier and better service, if you might try, post here or PL and I'll suggest some dishes. Barbara, I still say this time try Daniella and next time...BROWN SAUCE!! Be well and don't get any on ya... David |

Hank, I think Waldy's is a takeout place (just a few counter seats). But now that you've reminded me, I'll try it for lunch... |

You all are just fantastic!! I so appreciate this. I was afraid that there would not be too much in the area...it has been a very long time since I have gone to the Garden with time to spare before an event...so I am looking forward to this evening. I will let you all know what we end up doing Saturday (with a review of Neil Diamond at 60 something).... Thanks again!! (If someone else has more ideas though, keep them coming....) :-) |

BGS- You are in for a real treat. We went to the ND concert last night and it was AWESOME. We've been seeing Neil in concert since the Bitter End days in the 60's. This was one of his better - if you like the love songs and touchy feely stuff. We do. Not to say he didn't do lots of other great stuff. America was amazing. Have fun. My train was late so we just grabbed some Greek in the little fast food place across from the Garden. It was fresh, fast and cheap. Chinese and Italian in same place with shared "dining room". |

MSG-the concert was outstanding...I saw Neil Diamond first in 1969 at the Winter Garden when a date took me for my birthday. I was impressed then and have seen him whenever I could over the years. We had floor seats last night and I was amazed that this 64 year old entertainer still sounds as good as he does and at his energy without trying to look like a kid...He is so special!!! We got in late as well and ended up at the Play by Play in the Garden and had a good burger... There is good review of the concert in today's Times. |
