Anyone been to Pal's Cabin in West Orange? How's the food? Are they kid friendly? Thank you!

Only ate there once, but it is definitely kid-friendly. I thought the food was mediocre. |

It's one of those musty-crusty places that reminds me of restaurants my grandparents took us to in the 70s & probably hasn't redecorated since. If I recall, their version of veggies is boiled canned green things & potatos. But, burgers are decent. I haven't been in a few years; a coworker used to crave Pal's when she was pregnant & we would humor her on occassion. But, let us know how it is! BTW, Bets - whatever possessed you to order Eggs Benedict there? Were you drinking? |

Pal's is a nostalgic, nice place--I don't think it's musty/crusty at all. Burgers are excellent, I'm told steaks are good--very kid friendly and I must say you can get a bad egg anywhere though I understand being leery because of the pain involved. Try Pal's; it has it's place. Eat well, all. David |

its more a throwback type of place...started as a small burger stand I believe (there is still a counter in the front of the building you can sit at). Burgers are real good...I havent ventured past those. |

Love the burgers! Filet mignon is nice, too. Kitchen area is viewable and is very clean. (Bets, hollandaise sauce is made from raw egg yolks. It's a gamble anywhere.) |

Greenetree - I actually think I went there in the late 70s/early 80s with my grandparents. Whenever I drive by it, I always think of old people. |

I know eggs are a gamble, etc., but I still can't stomach the place. |

Burgers are excellent! I think they're pretty well known for their cream of mushroom soup too. http://www.palscabin.com |

Best Blue Cheese Burger in the area, hands down. Saw Lou Lameriello in there the day after the Devils won their second Stanley Cup-don't know what he got. GO RANGERS!!! |

Pal's Cabin ROCKS and I am glad it's still there! My parents took us there as kids and the decor is still definitely nostaglic of that decade . Their burgers ARE the BEST and the steak is AWESOME! I took my husband there recently and he had thumbs up throughout the meal. My brother is an "Emeril-type" guy who loves sitting at the lunch counter with the "regulars"! |

Took a business acquaintance there recently because it was convenient for both of us...we sat in the bar room and we had a very good martini and then really really good prime ribs of beef...excellent garlic mashed and the salad was very fresh and a great mix of greens and real blue cheese in the dressing...Definately a throw back to the 50's and 60's but the service was good and the prices reasonable for the food that we had. Not a date night place IMHO... |

One afternoon, take your kids there. Great hot dogs, sandwiches (The Corned beef "Redwood" is amazing!), BEST burgers, and the aforementioned Cream of Mushroom soup is addictive. Great pre-movie joint, or lunch/dinner with the kids--enjoy! |

We had dinner there once. I thought it was overpriced for what you get (glorified diner food, most of it). If you're going to pay upwards of $20 for an entree, your salad should NOT be made with iceberg lettuce. And the vinaigrette dressing was so strong that I literally started gasping for air at one point. We may also have been the only couple there who weren't senior citizens. |

The food is mediocre and over-priced considering I didn't like it. Definitely kid friendly though. |

Don't get the calamari - tasted like rubber bands, and the batter was equally awful. |

We were there once for soup, burgers, and onion rings. All were great, and it fills a much-needed gap in our child friendly restaurant repertoire. They offer a bunch of other pricey things on the menu, but it struck us as a place where you stick to what they do best - burgers, and presumably, steaks. Weird note about the mushroom soup. When i lived on the UWS in manhattan, i used to love the cream of chicken soup at a nearby diner. Something about the orzo noodles (or was it rice?) in a cream-based soup had me going back for it every week. When we moved to Maplewood, my withdrawl hadn't even kicked in before i discovered the cream of turkey soup served every weekend at the Sage Diner (not to be confused with the New Sage Diner, which is now the Parkwood Diner). I swear, it was the same exact soup. It's the only reason i mourn the Sage's passing. Anyway, i tried the cream of mushroom soup at Pals, and it tastes exactly the same... just replace the orzo with the mushrooms. It's a curiosity indeed! |

An admirable claim to fame, indeed. I wouldn't be averse to going there if the opportunity presented itself, I suppose. |

great place to go to get a decent burger and beer at a reasonable price... and that seems pretty hard to come by around here. it's definitely a meat-and-potatoes place, so vegetarian probably won't dig it.

Just my opinion, but I'd rather support a local business that's been around since 1932, than a national restaurant chain. I've been very happy with the meals I've had at Pal's Cabin. Even the fanciest of New York restaurants falter on certain menu items; some dishes are better than others. Unless you have some other really bad experience, it's usually worthwhile to go back at least a couple of times and try different dishes. Specials are often good choices, and sometimes when I'm new to a restaurant, I'll ask what dishes the restaurant is best known for, for example, the mushroom soup at Pal's Cabin. I've always been happy with the selections, since I am pretty adventurous with my dining and am willing to try new things. |

The best cream of mushroom soup in the world - but I got serious food poisoning from the stuffed pork chop (many, many years ago) |

I beg to differ. I think the cream of mushroom soup served at The Manor in West Orange is better. But it's almost in a different class... very chi-chi and rich, with shitaki mushrooms and stuff. I have the recipe from when it was printed in the Star Ledger years ago. |

There's a second dining room -- in the back, with a different hostess stand -- We asked to sit there & it was a total time warp. Burgundy pleather booths, nautical decor, and big icy martinis from the separate bar. Chopped sirloin & skillet fried chicken are our coronary-inducing favorites. (But, hey, doesn't that martini slice through some of the cholesterol?) -- And we were easily the youngest in the room by 15-20 years. (The front area, with the windows and the wood booths, is more kid-friendly, or at least kid-populated.)

I ate at Pal's for the first time over the weekend and was pleased with my meal, as were my friends. Two of us had the mushroom soup (which was fantastic, as expected) and salads which were fine, and the third had a fish entre that she liked. It was crowded and noisy, but that didn't bother us. Overall, it was a good experience and I would go back again. |

Soda used to wax poetical about the "Grilled Redwood" sandwich at this eatery... BTW, noting that the parking lot (when viewed from above) seems immense in relation to the rather compact footprint of the restaurant itself, and never having explored the interior myself, I pose a question: are Pal's customers jammed in like sardines, or does the place employ some borderline-mystical mode of space allocation/matter compaction offering diners the illusion of elbow room? Clarification on this matter would end many years of conjecture by several of my associates here in the Great Beyond. Go in peace. --The Oracle of MOL |

Oracle: I think the place has a lot more seats than one would think from the outside. The tables are well spaced, and I don't feel crowded in at all. They do have a waiting room downstairs. It is nice to know that you can always find a parking space because the lot is large. |

Some girlfriends and I went up to Pal's for dinner on Friday night and were totally satisfied! I had the mushroom soup - which is like liquid gold - and a salad. The other girls really enjoyed their meals as well. I haven't been there in a while (prior to Friday) but I am still a big fan!! |
