I believe that, besides Buffalo wings, that is one of few decent things that O'Reilleys makes. At least my husband has ordered it more than once. |

I also second Jay's, and it's a friendly, simple place. The best ones are at Pat's, 9th and Passyunk, in Philadelphia, and worth the trip. Pat's is open 24 hours a day. |

...sorry, but H2TA has the worlds best cheese cake!!! I'm not kidding about this. If you dont believe it, drop in anytime for a wee free sample.... Listen up Art, call Chef Scott and have him light the ovens, because once Kevin LaPierre and the others taste our cheese cake, we'll never be able to keep up with the demand! |

Innisowen, how are the rolls at Jay's? The thing I typically find all wrong about cheese steaks (and their tasty cousin, the chicken cheese steak) and subs around here is the rolls. Too hard, or too hot dog-like in nature. *sigh* cheese steaks...mmmm...used to live in Delaware and dine on these regularly between Philly and Wilmington. |

I actually went to lunch at a new bar in Maplewood last week, and had a really good cheesesteak. It's called The Bar Room, and it's in the former location of the Northside Tavern (i think that's what it was called). The place that was in the movie One True Thing. It's on the corner of Laurel Ave and Burnett Ave, across the street from the Quick Check. The bar itself isn't anything special, and it looks like it may be still finding its niche - but they have a lunch menu. We were the only ones in there for a while, and after we ordered, we heard the bartender in the back, chopping up my steak himself. It's served with spanish potatoes, which are a cross between french fries and homemade potato chips. Greasy, but oddly addicting. |

Cynical Girl: you and I have exchanged posts before re Delaware. The BEST cheesesteak I ever had was in a little deli at the start of Elkton Road in Newark, after the curve from town, maybe 250 yards down from the Deer Park. But the place isn't there anymore unfortunately. And the cheesesteak rolls at Jay's are quite acceptable for this neck of the woods, by the way. |

Jay's is on left side of Springfield going west, about 100 yards past the right turn onto Millburn Avenue. It's just beyond Nunzio's, the barbecue place. Very friendly people. Simple surroundings. |

Daffy's Deli, Innisowen? I'm remembering now (old posts, and the deli) Are you old enough to remember the "special" chees steaks at a place on Academy St, Newark? Late at night, a "special" was 2 cans of beer in a sub roll. Big hit. |

I am old enough, but I used to be younger. I remember the Stone Balloon in its heyday ( I think I fogged out a lot there). Yes, it was Daffy's Deli, I believe. Here's to Newark (2 distinct syllables)! |

While we're on the subject: What's up with people around here putting KETCHUP on cheesesteak?!?! Disgusting. Seems to come by default unless you order it otherwise. And a sloppy joe has ground beef in it, dammit! |

On Fridays Nat's Deli on the corner of Elmwood and Boyden has a cheesesteak special that is really good and they deliver too....Anybody here old enough to remember Hanks cheesesteaks on Clinton Ave in Irvington? They were the best... |

Growing up in Pennsylvania, there really is no comparison to Philly. I know it's too far from Maplewood/South Orange, but if only one of the restaurants has a Philly cheesesteak and then tries to copy it.....YUM! |

I passed through Newark this spring, after a wedding in Baltimore, and over beers heard from former colleagues at the U of D that the Stone Balloon was closing. That's too bad. What's going into its place, a Chili's or a Bennigan's, god help us? |

Dawny: SAMS!!! OMG!!!! Sams was like my second home! Except we never ate cheesesteaks there--it was always "Sambolis." And $1 pitchers--ah, yes, those were the days. Had not heard the Stone Balloon closed--that's too bad. Certainly hope the Deer Park is still open. And what about Klondike Kates--is that still around? |

Sam's was the place that had the late night "special" subs with 2 beer cans! I blanked on the name. Durned shame about the Balloon. I was a townie, and am twice an alum ('76 and '98). I used to love going to the Balloon in the summer when they'd get really cool bands that appealed to an older audience. More recently, the East End Cafe (seeing Richie Havens, Jonathon Richmond and the Modern Lovers, Louden Wainwright III). I was also a Deer Park person. Remember George Thorogood? I think KK is still there, though there's been a marked move towards coffee joints, etc. *sigh* |

Was George from there? You say Thorogood and this immediately comes to mind: "One bourbon, one scotch, one beer No I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' and a week, gotta get drunk man till I can't even speak Gonna get high man listen to me, one drink ain't enough Jack you better make it three I wanna get drunk I'm gonna make it real clear, I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer One bourbon, one scotch, one beer" And on that note, have a good week - with or without cheesesteaks.

Yes, George most certainly was (and I think is, though I last heard he'd bought a spread just over the line in PA, West Chester-ish). So was Bill Blough, the drummer for a long time. Used to be, even after they got famous, every New Year's they'd play a tickets-only party at the Deer Park. |

wendy, George's band, The Destroyers was at one time known as the Delaware Destroyers. OB, OS, OB was written by John Lee Hooker...its who I think of when I hear of the song. |

Rumor had it that George played a concert in one of the dorms on the beach (Harrington, maybe?) a few years before I got there. (I started in fall 1981.) |

So many fellow Blue Hens in M-SO. Class of '94. Ate cheesesteaks from Cleveland Deli all the time, especially when my roommate was a delivery guy. Used to go to Philly all the time just for the cheesesteaks. Haven't been back, but I hear the Deer Park is no longer a dive. Too bad. Is Rainbow Records still on Main St? |

Cleveland Deli was GREAT! Real good roastbeef subs, too, as I recall. It's been 3 years since I was in the DP, but, yeah it got all redoe. When I left, I was more in the Crab Trap zone, age and interest wise, and also the East End. Not sure about Rainbow...he kept changing/shrinking his "concept." By now it's probably a Borders... |
