Hi All, We are going to Lancaster next week for a few days to go to Hershey park (one day) and explore the area for the rest of the time we are there. I have been to various web sites and have a few ideas in mind but I thought I would ask the well-traveled and savvy MOL community if they had any suggestions. THanks |

CageyD, Who is "We"? Kids? Adults? Geriatric or adolescent participants? Where are you staying? Lancaster proper is a good hour or so from Hershey Park.

The National Toy Train Museum is great, as is the Railroad Museum, if you're even a little bit of a railroad buff. And if you're not a railroad buff, you just might become one after visiting those places.

Bill P we are staying in Manhiem which I've been told - hopefully truthfully - is only about 30 min from Hershey. Kids in tow ages 6 & 9. We are staying at a farm B&B |

CageyD, I just booked a farm B&B long weekend for the April break, Country Gardens B&B in Mount Joy. Hoping to do a day at Hershey after we check out. Plan on taking the boys to Strasberg to the railroad, maybe take a ride in an Amish Buggy. Apparently you can make reservations to have a meal with an actual Amish family, which seems like it might be kind of cool, but also maybe kind of wierd? Hubby and I did a long weekend at a "grown up" B&B this past February. We enjoyed walking around the town of Intercourse (although I think probably it's too far from Mahniem), some nice galleries and spectacular quilts--if you have hundreds of dollars to spend on such things! There are also lots of covered bridges in the area, and I think you may be able to get a map of their locations on-line. Keep us posted about what you did, some things we might look forward to for April, and have fun. |

Lots to do just in Hershey itself, especially for the little 'uns. Chocolate World at Hershey Park has a couple of things where they can learn how chocolate is made, and they have a fun trolley ride that tours around the town and gives an overview of the history. One of the tour guides goes through about a dozen costume changes and plays various characters in the life of Milton Hershey. The park itself is fun. They've got a bunch of rides for younger kids, the aquatic show is pretty cool, and they have a small zoo that shows all North American animals. By the way, the Tudor Grill (just outside the entrance) has the best food around. Go for the pot roast - it's like my mom used to make. Indian Echo cavern (about ten minutes from the Park) was kind of neat ... beautiful caverns and a good tour. Kids should enjoy it. I went to college in Lancaster, but I'm darned if I can think of anything for kids to do there. I think Manheim is halfway between the two. |
