Recently ate at Ginger Taste on Millburn Avenue in Millburn (looks like an old IHOP, which it is). Not classic Thai food, but certainly Thai-influenced food, and very good. The duck dish was outstanding, as was the Thai curry. It is one of those really good places that people talk about but rarely go to for some reason.

Also like Morris Thai on Morris Avenue in Union. A typical Thai restaurant with good quality food and excellent service.

I agree with the Ginger Taste recommendation (and they deliver). Khun Thai in Millburn is good. My favorite Thai place is about 20 minutes away, though--Thai Thai in Stirling.

We often do Morris Thai on Morris Ave in Union for takeout. Its good and more reasonably priced than Khun Thai.

I thought Morris Thai was awful... although maybe it was just the dish i had. It was bleh enough for me to not go back again.

I think Khun Thai is excellent, although a little pricier for takeout than i prefer. If i go, i prefer to eat-in there.

Origin in Morristown. French Tai. Outstanding but not cheap. Duck in tamarind sauce. Vegetable rolls. Beautiful setting both up and downstairs. Reservation for sure. Branch in Somerville.

I like Morris Thai, but I think it smells like mothballs. Not a great atmosphere, but the food is good and cheap.

Penang is a Malaysian/Thai restaurant (Thai menu is smaller than Malaysian) 973-887-6989. Lots of tasty dishes from both these countries. Located on Route 10 West, East Hanover. On the weekends, plan on going early for lunch/dinner as it is a very popular restaurant.

I didn't like Penang the one time I went about two years ago. I thought the food tasted kind of processed and cheap. I've heard many others recommend it though, so I'd give it another try.

I agree with Taurus. Very disappointing. Plus, I think they use MSG.

Taurus, Joe:

Truly, give Penang another try--PL me and I'll tell you things to order. I've been going to their places since at least '92 and it can be superb and usually is.

Dine well and be well, all.

Tuptim and Thai Chef, both on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, are both outstanding. They are worth the drive.

I thought Ginger Taste was pretty good, but I wouldn't characterize it as a Thai restaurant...more like pan-Asian.

I LOVE PENANG! I get the Kari Mee with Shrimp and I would reccomend it to everyone.

The Kari Mee is a curried soup bowl with noodles, shrimp and some soybeans. I know that doesn't sound impressive, but the soup has such a wonderful flavor. I love this dish so much (and I don't go to the restaurant regularly enough) that I never get anything else. I also eat EVERY drop of it, so I'm stuffed everytime I leave. It's just that good that I can't stop myself.

Morris Thai we liked and it's great for kids (at least the well behaved ones). Last christmas, the owner would not let us leave until our daughter picked an ornament off their christmas tree to keep as her souvenir. Rather thrilling for her. Really nice wait staff. Food's good too!

Thai, Thai in Gillette is great - need a reservation. Stop at Zita's for the BEST homemade ice cream ever. Still love Taste of Asia, in Chatham, the best. Citrus Beef and Yom Tom Soup!!! Walk over to Gabriella's for microbatched ice cream. Not quite as good as Zita's but the owner is a hoot!

Thai Kitchen in Bridgewater is excellent. Better than Thai Thai. There are 3 and all are good, but I like the one off the Somerville Circle, near Barnes and Noble. Great red curry!
