Thinking of fall leads me to think of apple picking. Anyone have a favorite farm? Preferably near a quaint town...?

Mellick's in Oldwick has been my family's favorite for 10 years. Not too far away, a 1/2 hour or so west of here off of Rte. 78. Oldwick is a pleasant little town, with a nice family restaurant/general store in the center.

Mellick's has several varities of apples to choose from, as well as a pumpkin patch.

Ben's right, Melick's is the best. There's a really nice Melick's on route 24 as you go west of Morristown, go through Chester and continue following 24 signs to Long Valley. You will see Melick's apple and peach orchard on the left, in a region called "Middle Valley" but it's miles down the road past Chester, so you have to prepare for a drive. It's worth it.

Please, if you haven't seen Hunterdon and western Morris County in the fall, plan to visit for a weekend at the height of the foliage season if you want a dramatic view of New Jersey in all its glory. Before the height of the season, apple orchards open. They're open now.
See you there!!!

PS We also have vinyards. We have King's Road Winery in Alexandria Township. We have Alba Vinyards on route 627 in Pohatcong Township (although they say they are in Milford, they are in Warren County about twelve miles down the road from the Bloomsbury exit from route 78, onto route 173, then 639, then 627 (all the same road in the same westerly direction,) then Four Sisters Winery on route 519 outside of Hope, NJ. Some of these have websites, and are great. One's in my own neighborhood, and I can tell you, I'm not being a wine maven, but the wine's pretty tasty.

We go to

Tree-Licious Orchards
135 Karrville Rd
Port Murray, NJ
908-852-7191 or 908-689-2906

I'm not sure which number is right, but one of them is. Call before you go so you know what's ready for picking. Very nice folks. I go there because the setting is so beautiful. It's a bit east of the intersection of Routes 31 and 57, which is in Washington Township. I think it's in Warren County.

I went to Lancaster this past weekend and although I don't have a suggestion for apple-picking, I've got to tell you that I tried an apple I had never heard of before. It was a Sansa apple. One of the most crisp, delicious, juicy apples I have ever had! I brought one into work yesterday and as I was about to eat it I offered my co-worker a bite. She took it, and then she would give it back because it was so good.

Anyway, it's supposed to be one of the first eating apples of the season, so look for it.

Is Melicks good for small children (age 6 and under)? Mine want to go applepicking, but I need a place that's easy, low hassle, not too far, not too adventurous...(as in, no major hikes out to the apple area).

Melicks is fine for all ages-we started going out to the one in Oldwick when my oldest was 4. The orchard is right next to the parking lot. There is a tractor ride to the pumpkins and the apples too far to reach by foot.

Closer to you...There's a farm just about ten miles south of Morristown on 202. It's called Wightman's and it has been selling fruits and vegetables, plants and pumpkins as long as I can remember (at least as early as the late 1960's.) They have an apple orchard for apple picking, good parking and HAYRIDES!!! (lots of fun for kids, as long as you go with them...)
To get to Wightmans, go toward Morristown (24 from Maplewood, I believe) then get on 287 South. Watch for the exit to Harter Road, just past Morristown. Exit at Harter, turn left over the overpass to 202 and turn left (south on 202.) Follow that for about eight miles, past the Talbots on the right, Anson Newton clothing store on the left, Minuteman Restaurant on the left (not in that order) and along to a turn in the road, you will see Wightman's on your right, just before the gas station and before the Old Mill Inn Restaurant (which is a great place for an old colonial atmosphere as you dine on American fare.)
Wightman's has a cider mill, and great pies and doughnuts. It will be MUCH more crowded than Melicks, lots of kids and families, but it is closer than Melicks.
There are more places, like Alstede's in Chester, but they are all more crowded than Melicks.

The advantage of Wightman's is the cider mill. I believe you can actually watch cider being made.

If you are up for a drive Eastmont Orchards in Colts Neck is very nice. WE go there to pick peaches, nectarine and apples (different times of year). THey have a row or two of Granny Smith trees as well as convenetional red apples. You can then go to Delicious Orchards supermarket nearby which has a GREAT selection of cheeses, produce, baked goods, teas, coffee and ice cream. You take the Red Bank Exit off the GSP

If you don't want to be social, try Philips Farms way out west in the hills near the Delaware. They have a website with directions for driving. They have all sorts of fruits and vegetables, and you may not see another soul while you're there. In the shed there is a scale where you weigh what you pick; you pay on the honor system.

Thanks, all. I know all about Wightmans, and do love it. We have been going there for the past few years for the hayrides and pumpkin-picking....I was just interested in something more rural and less crazed (it's a zoo around pumpkin time). Will try Melicks, maybe Eastmont. Thanks!

fwiw, here's a link to a similar discussion I started a couple of years ago:

/discus/messages/129/21660.html?1066088236

We went to Melick's, and went back again last year. It was great. Last year we got (I think) two baskets (1/2 bushel each?) of apples and ate them all.

Hey, weekends, do you know if Philips Farms sells homemade jam? The name rings a bell. I used to buy great jams from a vendor at the WTC farmers market, and I think they may be the ones.
