Where are the adult (i.e. non-college kid) bars in M/SO and Millburn, preferably near a train station?

St. James Gate in the heart of Maplewood. Irish pub. Good food, many good beers. Very popular, though, so you may have trouble getting in. A block and a half from the train.

C'ent Anni around the corner also has a small bar area, but they are really more a fine restaurant with a bar.

The train station in Millburn is a little further away from their center of life, but there's a Charlie Browns and also a place that is, I believe, called Martini's, which is a much more upscale joint. Both are right by the corner of Millburn and Main Streets, close to the movie theatre.

You can search MOL for a place called the Gaslight in South Orange for entertaining reading. It can go between being an adult hangout to a college bar very easily. Probably my mere mention of the name here will earn me some flame posts. I've never frequented the place but there are going to be horror stories.

Martinis in Millburn on Main Street. Very noisy. Looks like a huge, affluent, singles crowd.

Don't forget Papillion 25 (?) on Valley in South Orange, next to the Wine Emporium. And Voro on Vose Avenue.

While my kids were home during the summer they hung out at St. James, Cryans, and Gaslight. I understand the O'Reilly's is popular with the college set too. I would avoid all of those when the kids are around. Martini's, so I've been told, is a hangout for divorced and wishing-they-were-divorced, adults. I wouldn't know, we drink at home.

See, that's just something that doesn't exist in the lesbian world. There are no bars (that I know of) where lesbian women who have ended long term relationships hang out. The problem is more the opposite - it is hard to find a gay/lesbian identified watering hole where one is not pestered by the 18-24 year old set looking either to get initiated or young supposedly straight women looking to cross over for a night. I think I've recognized half the au pairs in town from various NY bars - it is odd to see them with a kid in a stroller when I remember the last way I saw them.

Just FWIW the Cent'Anni bar has seating for 40 (tables and bar)and room for more standing - so not particularly small - and with the live music I have been introducing - live blues on Thursdays, superb live jazz on Fridays and Saturdays - I believe it fits the bill in catering for the 'older than college kid crowd'....And it's two minutes from the train station

Bunnies:
Great place for a pizza and beer. Not really a singles / pickup bar but lots of fun.

Cryans:
More of a pick up bar and pretty popular with the collage kids, has it’s ups and downs

Gaslight:
50 / 50 on being a collage bar, lot’s of adults and kids

Lot 15:
Still evolving mostly adult not sure many singles go there

Papillion 25:
Adult with some singles, the bar is just a little small for a good crowd

St James Gate:
Not a lot of collage kids, but also not a ton of singles, more of a family place

O’ Riley’s
Collage bar

By Train *******
Martinis
Meat Market, make sure you have some condoms and a lot of cash.

Office (Summit)
Just like the offices every where, crowd depends on time of day.

Main streets (Madison)
Great happy hour and some pretty good bands at night. Over all, the best place to go while single or looking for a few new friends.

Drive *******
Cecil’s (West Orange)
Great date place, superior bands

Rock Bottom (West Orange)
Collage crowd

South City Grill (Montclair)
Much like Main Streets, Great happy hour and a good crowd

I haven't been to the Gaslight in 3 years due to inexplicably rude and off the wall choices by staff.
When it opened I tried, brought people, tipped well, etc...
they don't get it.

Hey Jet, no apologies needed. I'm sure you do your best to keep hip and current. I have to confess that I have gone to bars solely because the barkeep was droolworthy.

You mean you haven't been to VORO, Dave? You gotta go at least once, and I say that even though I hardly drink at all. I'm not a tea-totaller. My problem is that alcohol puts me to sleep quickly. Anyway, the rumors about the waitstaff at VORO are true. I wonder if they're ripe for a class action suit, because their hiring policy seems to require people with a certain look.

(My point was Cato's new nom-de-plume and tendency to set up and then launch homophobic jokes. He's now portraying a lesbian. I guess it's funny to some people, but I think it's pathetic.)

I should have added Bunny's (Bunnies? Bun-ease?)... what was I thinking? Where else can you go for inexpensive pitchers of good beer and a pizza buffet?
