My daughter wants to have a dance party for her peers after her bat mitzvah. This will be in June. We are envisioning a place like a garage or some other sort of unusual place. In fact, I thought Nelson's Garage looks like a nice cavern, but I bet with all the equipment, they wouldn't let us rent the place. Wouldn't it be cool, though? Anyway, any ideas?

My daughter and a friend had a joint bat mitzvah party several years ago at the Elks Club in South Orange. Plenty of room, quite funky inside. The kids thought that it was cool to sit at the bar and be served soft drinks. We had pizza delivered, and a big cake. We got a DJ who brought a couple of "dance motivators". A good time was had by all. |

I would think about Here's 2 the Arts for reasons of the club ambience and the bar. I'll bet a lot of more unusal places would have insurance restrictions forbidding -- or a lack of interest in young persons partying/dancing (thinking of small art museums or businesses).

A Museum could be expensive because you have to get insurance, the policy I need is ridiculous. We’ve had lots of parties in our barn, I’d offer that to you but it’s 1.5 hours away, little to far of a drive, but if your interested PL me. (of course no smoking by the parents) A warehouse is also cool because of the high ceilings. We set up a poker tournament in one with spot lights that shined on each table. Looked really cool. Is there a piece of land big enough to set up a party tent? Those are inexpensive, and can be decorated pretty neat.

Great ideas, folks! Oh, I just remembered, a couple of weeks ago, I saw a private party (I think that's what it was) in Memorial park. Does one get a permit or rent space or what? Maybe we could put tents up there. The woman's club has crossed our minds. I like that place.

Check the NJ Bridal resources, a lot of places including NPO's rent out their spaces and advertise/list for weddings. You'd be surprised at the variety. A word of warning-if you're going to do this in June Book Now!! Space, caterer, DJ.... It's the Wedding Month. |

Liberty Science Center will be closed for renovations next June. How about Roseland in the city and some real ballroom dancing for the kids: http://www.roselandballroom.com/special_pricelist.html

Not too far, out of consideration for all the attendees who live around here. Our congregation (Beth Hatikvah) is in Chatham. I suppose 15 miles away or so is OK. But NYC seems like too much trouble and expense to heap on others.

Very clever, and you're the second person to mention that. The first said he didn't have the chutzpah to mention it on MOL. Great minds think alike, I guess.

Since your congregation is in Chatham how about Jockey Hallow, Morristown Airport, The Arbaterrian (SP) in Summit? There's a new place in Livingston called 'Good Timez.' 1888-388-party. There's the boat house by the pond in Verona as well. My sister in law and brother had a party for my niece at the recreation building in West Orange. It's on Pleasant Valley Way. They had a DJ plus an assortment of other entertainment. |

I was recently at the Short Hills Hilton and some girl was having a Wicked-themed bat mitzvah (Wicked as in the musical). Looked like the guest list was about 300, and I can only imagine the cost.

I guess I forgot to mention that one of our aims is to spend less than what people typically spend. Some parents treat this like a wedding. I don't want to go into debt for this. Some of the costs I have seen have stunned me.

Tom you are looking for a off beat club setting like an old whearhouse it sounds like. Over in the Valley in Orange there are a group[ of old whearhouses that look empty and have signs that say for rent or sale. I also have always thought that the south orange train station would make for a great location for a kids dance party the acoustics would be great and with all the levels the kids would have a blast. |
