As a public service, and in accord with the startlingly sagacious suggestion from President George "The Dope" Bush that you Americans should drive less, I must, with some dismay, advise you that the venerable Nettie Ochs Cider Mill, located on Old Short Hills Road in Livingston, has placed in its driveway a sign, announcing that it is closed for the season.

I noticed this sad announcement over the weekend, whizzing past on my Vincent Black Shadow while on my way to pick up some take-out pizza from "Master pizza" on Northfield Road.

I know not why the Ochs people have taken such action, and merely mention it here out of consideration for your little mortal children, who no doubt look forward to such pumpkin picking, cider quaffing, and donut munching as is usually provided by decendants of the late Ms. Ochs at this time of your earthly year.

Thusly forwarned (in addition to a minor opportunity for saving gasoline, as was so perversely advocated by your "President"), you may now avoid the dire disappointment which would certainly be otherwise visited upon your dear little tots when arriving at the unexpectly-barred gateway, and dejectedly realizing that their eagerness for the Mill's usual array of apple-related products is to be cruelly denied this year.

I myself will miss both Ochs' apple butter and cider-sweetened donuts, which I did so enjoy during most of my brief seventy year residence in SOMA.

Let us hope that next apple season will bring with it the re-opening of this local gem.

Go in peace.

There is an article in the latest edition of Matters Magazine about Nettie Ochs. Proprietor Robert Ochs passed away and his family is using this season to regroup. They are planning to reopen in 2006.

I just read that article this morning, after passing the mill on the way to and from the doctor's office a few times a year and wondering what it was. The story was obviously written before they knew the place would be closed for the season, because the whole thing was geared toward getting customers to stop by. My mouth was watering by the end, and then i got to the Epilogue about Robert Ochs and the note that it wouldn't be in business until next Sept. Such a tease. =-(
