We are going to Mohonk Mountain House for 3 days. I was thinking of stopping in New Paltz for a couple of hours before heading up. Is there a Main Street worth walking down? Shops? food? Any tips ofr the area is greatly appreciated!

New Paltz is a cute little college town. There's the Gilded Otter brew pub just before the bridge out of town going towards Mohonk Mountain House. There are a couple of little restuarants around. You can park and walk around to check them out. I would highly recommend taking the drive up to the Shawagunks for a nice hike. Take Main street straight through town until you come to a T in the road-go right and follow the road up the mountain to the park. Beautiful scenic overlooks. Or take the bikes for a nice couple hour ride around the lake. It is one of my absolute favorite places especially at this time of year. |

There are a few lots if you can't find street parking. There are a few artsy type places and shops off the main street so do walk around. Its not a big town and three hours is more than enough time. Have a great time. The leaves are starting to turn up that way. We stopped to take a quick tour of Mohonk Mountain House one time. It is really nice up there. Although it does remind me of the Shining.... |

we've heard that it is very Shining-esque. we even have a very "out there" friend who SWEARS it's haunted
but I am not afraid! I will have the formidable Notehead to protect me. Thanks for the tips!

It's a cute town. They even have a Starbucks now, which is good or bad depending on whom you ask. A bunch of little antiquey shops. Honestly don't know if it's worth spending time there though. For us it's nostalgic, but I'd think Mohonk has plenty to offer. Another idea is to go to a few of the wineries up there if you have time to kill. We loved to go to Baldwin Vineyards, it's in Pinebush not too far from New Paltz. There's also Brotherhood (the oldest winery or so they say) and a few others close by. We spent many weekends going to Baldwin. Have many fond memories...good wine too! |

We thought about the wineries, but we don't really want to leave Mohonk once we get there - too much to do while there. but we figured if we were heading through New Paltz anyway... |

(I meant before you got there...) If you DO stop by Baldwin, get a case and we'll split it with you! (Love the Reisling, Gewertztrminer, Vignoles, etc...of course that was back in the day before I liked reds...) |

There's also a Huguenot village that's part of NP. Original buildings from the 1700s, some of which are open to the public. |

Is Rhino Records still in New Paltz? Used to be a great record store, but I have no idea if it's still there. |

We once lived in New Paltz. It is a cute town, although I understand it's about to lose its independent bookstore, which might still be there if you're visiting New Paltz soon - Ariel Booksellers. There's a nice craft store on North Front Street - Handmade & More - which has been there since the 1970's. You might also want to take a jaunt to High Falls, where there are lots of nice restaurants, or to Woodstock, which you can either get to via a scenic route over the mountain (check google maps or ask at Mohonk) or or by taking the Thruway to the Kingston exit. |

Well, Pippi, as you well know, I've been to Mohonk no less than 20 times (probably closer to 30) and---I'm ashamed to say--I've stopped in New Paltz probably no more than 5 times, and when I do, it's always for cash, to pick up a pair of jeans I forgot to pack, or something like that. So if you find some cool spots, be sure to drop a line to give me details, so that when the Missus and I are there in Nov. and the extended family and I are there for New Years we can take advantage of your education re: New Paltz. All that said, if you so choose you will find plenty to keep you occupied at Mohonk, including great hikes and fantastic leaf-peeping. Have a great time w/ the fierce Mr. Notehead.

I grew up near there (between New Paltz and Newburgh). Its your basic college town. Not sure if P&G's is still there or Joe's. Both were big college bars that we used to frequent when we were in HS. Other than a couple of quaint shops there's not much to see. It was very artsy back then and I imagine its gotten a little more commercial as has everything else up there. I believe there are still plenty of antique places to go shopping. The Rambling Rose clothing store on Main street has some funky clothes. Do the Smiley's still own Mohonk Mountain House? If all else fails you can stop in and say hi to my parents. I was also thinking about taking a day trip up there to check out the foliage in the next week or so. |

We still have friends there. P & G's is definitely still in business, and if the Joe's you're talking about is the disco, it's still there, too. |

Those were my husband's college haunts too. We used to get nice Italian at Bacchus I think. Plus I remember eating knishes with cheese from some little stand. |

I remember Bacchus. Jem - Disco? I think it was called Joe's dance hall. My friends and I would never be caught dead in a disco. They used to have this special, can't remember if it was Friday or Saturday night, called nickel night. Yep all one shot drinks were a nickel. Screwdrivers, vodka tonic, gin & tonic, rum & coke all for a nickel. I am amazed we survived. We used to get hammered for a couple of bucks then head over to either Dunkin Donuts or the College Diner or I think the name was Pizi's pizza. Wow, I'm having flashbacks. |

Yo, Sleepy, I always loved that Rhino record store when we visited NP, alway had great, eclectic stuff used - and cheap. We went up this summer, though, and it had turned into another crummy, expensive-NEW and lousy-selection-USED shop - like so many others. The outdoor store next door, though, was having a sale and I bought a great pair of sandals so it wasn't a total loss. |

Mohonk was frikkin' AWESOME! we loved it, despite the not-so-great weather today. Yesterday we managed to get a full day of activity in, as the weather held. We had 8:30 massages, got a 3 hour hike in, took a row boat out, spent some time in the mineral bath in the spa and lounged out with books, feeling pretty all right. Mohonk (still owned by the Smileys after 136 years) has everything you could imagine a place such as Mohonk should have: gorgeous gardens, 85 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing and biking), a lake for boating and swimming in the summer, basketball courts, tennis courts, an outdoor ice rink in the winter, a billard room, fireplaces, porches with rocking chairs, afternoon tea, and a brand new 30,000 square foot spa with a pool. (The spa is incredible, well appointed, all the amenities) We did stop in New Paltz on our way in - had lunch at the Gilded Otter and walked the town for an hour. Notehead was disappointed in the beer he had at the Gilded Otter. There was another restaurant that looked nice I'd try next time, Beso. I can't recommend Mohonk enough! In a perfect world, we'd get to take a trip there once a year, but in reality, it is a bit pricey (although I am able to justify the cost because all meals are included.) www.Mohonk.com

Silly question, perhaps...but I remember when I was looking into it for our anniversary weekend I thought you (or Mwoodwalk? Or someone else) may have said you can't have alcohol someplace, either in the dining room, your room, I forget where. Anyway, what is the deal with alcohol, AND, my sister and her boyfriend are joining us and the girls for my birthday weekend! It would be nice to just go as couples too, but it seems there is so much for the kids to do as well. What did you guys do at night? |

Virtual It Girl, The alcohol deal is: can drink it in the dining room w/ dinner (for an extra charge, of course) & you can have it in your rooms (where, I believe, you can get it via room service, if you didn't bring your own----but I would recommend bringing your own); I believe also that the official policy is no consuming in common areas, although on multiple occassions I've sat and snuck a few beers with some other men while watching playoff football in one of the tv rooms ('twas very clandestine). As far as night activities, very often there are shows, performances, movies (i.e., videos). Call ahead/check the website. You can usually get those details before arriving.

mwood - was too cheap to splurge on the fireplace! what can I tell you? I am sure it was a mistake, but we enjoyed our room anyway! I was looking forward to telling you they opened a lounge, serves alcohol until 11p. We didn't partake because we brought some bottles from home for the room. They have movies every night (tonight was Cool Hand Luke). They also have board games - we played several games of scrabble in one of the common rooms. Swimming pool is open until 9p. There are NO TVs in the rooms, which didn't bother us at all. Not sure about weekend entertainment, but I am guessing it's more abundant and, well, entertaining!

I figured the fireplace didn't happen===save that for next time. Very cool to hear about the lounge; they must have opened that just this year; scrabble in the common rooms is excellent indeed.
