My wife and I moved here about one year ago from the Midwest. One of things things we were looking forward to the most was the Shore. Of course, we only got out a few days last summer to two places: Belmar (not for us and our 5 and 2 year old) and Cape May (we loved Cape May, the girls loved the Wildwood boardwalk). Now we want to get a place for a week next summer and only know that we need somewhere quieter and family-friendly with some access (within 1/2 hour?) to decent boardwalk rides. We loved Cape May and are considering getting a place on the beach north of the ferry, but know that a lot of folks from North Jersey go to LBI and other places closer to us here in SO. We are probably not in the Mantaloking or Spring Lake price range, but would like something nice. Oh, and warm ocean water matters to us. Probably looking at early August. Any advice on where to go? |

We went to Dewey Beach this year, right next to Rehoboth. It's in Delaware (it's where you take the Cape May Ferry to.) We love it and found it a little more family-friendly than Cape May. |

There are so many great places at the Jersey Shore, I fully understand the dilemma in choosing just one. FWIW, I absolutely love Cape May, and, IMHO, Cape May Point (on the southern tip of Cape May and NJ) is about as family friendly as it gets. Lots of cute little houses, quiet neighborhood, no honkey tonk, easy access to relatively empty stretches of beach, within easy biking or driving distance to "downtown" historic Cape May, and a short drive to Wildwood boardwalks. We just recieved our fully executed lease for our first rental there this past week. We rented for the first full week of August 2006, and I can't wait to go (I know it's a long wait, but it's certainly something to look forward to). The first real estate company I was dealing with was Coastline Realty (www.CoastlineRealty.com) They had several properties on the point, most of which sleep 6 and are in the neighborhood of $1500 to $1800 for a week. Ultimately, we ended up using a real estate company called Sticks and Dirt (www.sticksanddirt.com). The realtor, Heijung (pronounced hey zhung) Park-Colameco is a friend of my good friend who lives down in Cape May county. Heijung is also a former Maplewoodian. I would suggest you get started now, because it may already be too late to find a place for next summer. |

Sean, Ocean City, MD is a LOT of fun! You can drive down the NJ turnpike, and take the Cape May/Lewes ferrey to Delaware. It's not that far from there. Nice beaches, good fishing and eatin', and a HUGE boardwalk. Try to stay south of 12th Street, and you'll be within walking distance to the boardwalk. My folks took our family there every summer, sometimes twice from western PA. My folks go still for 3 weeks at a clip every summer, and take their boat and motorhome and camp out at Frontier Town. (Visit FT with the kids) Send for the Vacation planner packet: http://www.oceancity.org/vacation.asp

Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Avon are great family beaches and only 20 minutes from Point Pleasant Boardwalk. |

My family gets houses at the shore form Manasquan to Ocean city MD for years. But the prices are just getting to high. Figure $2000 for a place on the beach a few $150 meals per couple, and all the expense of the Boardwalk. Why not just to fly to the DR or one of the other Islands for the same price,?

My family loves Stone Harbor. It is just north or the wildwoods and Cape may and is very family friendly with a cute "downtown" that tweens and teens adore. We often do a day excursion to Wildwood (actually going at night)for the kids. There is a bird sanctuary and Wildlife Center and access to boating, whale watching, kayaking, etc. There is a movie theatre in town in case of rainy weather and the requisite multiple mini-golf as well. The beach is very lovely and well guarded by excellent life guards. House prices are indeed high as is true in most of the shore but depending on your needs you may still be able to find a relative bargain. Not everyone stays on the beach or has 150.00 meals. |

LBI is great. The further north you go on it, the quieter and more family friendly it becomes. And there is a very nice amusement park for kids just your age. We stayed in Barnegat Light last summer and loved it. This is the realtor we used. They have lots of listings: http://www.inmanlbi.com |

We absolutely love Ocean Grove. It is quaint, quiet, very family oriented with beautiful victorian homes and a very clean beach. It is between Asbury Park and Bradley Beach. The boardwalk extends all the way thru all the towns. We had the best time this past summer spending 2 weeks there with our then 15mo old son. We are definitely planning to go back annually. Google Ocean Grove and if you decide to stay there, book early. I could not more highly recommend it. And it is a very short drive, which is another plus for us driving with a child.

With a 2 year old and 5 year old, nothing beats Ocean City New Jersey. It is very family friendly, has a great boardwalk and wonderful beaches. It's a dry town, so there are no bars, although there are plenty across the bridges. Check it out: http://www.oceancityvacation.com/ |

LBI is awesome. I absolutely fell in love with it this past summer. We stayed in Loveladies, which is on the north end -- less commercial, more laidback -- but the south end and middle are great too, either bay or beach side. |

Cape May - fabulous restaurants, wonderful beach, free fudge every night at Fudge Kitchen, carriage rides, climbing the lighthouse - these will be my kids childhood memories, which are not much different than my own. The place is timeless without the screaming carnies. Wildwood is 20 minutes away if you really want that scene. You can find a nice 2 bedroom just 2-3 blocks from the beach for $1000-1200/week. |

Stone Harbor/Avalon are lovely. They are pretty quiet for Shore towns, but a short drive away from Wildwood and the boardwalk and rides. There are lots of interesting things to do in the area: Wetlands Institute, "Skimmer" cruises of the back bays, the lighthouses at CapeMay Point, Hereford Inlet, East Point are all within an easy drive. The Cape May County Zoo is about 10 minutes away (exit 11 on the GSP, Avalon is at 13, Stone Harbor at 10). Leaming's Run Gardens, Wheaton Village, Ocean City and its rides, the ferry to Lewes/Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and Smithville are all doable from this area. There's a hotel called the "Windrift" in Avalon (these two towns share one island, "7 Mile Island") - they have condos available to rent and you can use the facilities of the hotel (pool, parking). We used to stay there all the time before we bought our own place. There's also a motel called "Concord Suites" that has all suites and two large swimming pools. Also only a short block from the beach. If you'd like more details, please e-mail me/PM me and I'll be glad to try and get you phone numbers for these places. |
