I feel like going to a diamond-in-the-rough, hole-in-the-wall joint tonight with good food and cheap prices. Enough of this fine dining

Any suggestions?

SOSully,

Try

Los Tapatios (973) 736-8869
10 Main St
West Orange, NJ

Go to the the bar, not the restaurant. They also serve the restaurant's food there. Order the shrimp-avocado salad for appetizer. It's simple Mexican but I like it.

i grew up in SoCal where the carna asada burrito is king so one can never eat too much Mexican or in my case CA/Tex-Mex.

too bad, we have dinner plans elsewhere tonight or i would head down to los tapatios to drown this past week in a six-pack of Pacificos.

Have fun wherever you go tonite...

If you were in NYC I'd say go to the Ear Inn. Great food, and you'd never think so to look at it. Around here - Eddie's Long Bar in Newark or the Beacon Hill Tavern in Summit. Good food.

What else is good at Los Tapiatos? -- I too am looking for a hole-in-the wall dinner tonight.

Is it pretty cheap there? I am looking for cheap.

algebra2,

the carna asada is good and so are all of the tacos. the other meat dishes are good, too. it depends on what garnishment you like. the staff is real helpful and will answer our questions.

it's cheap. the wife and i went to the restaurant, which is BYOB. We got out of there with appetizer, entrees, dessert and tips for less than $40.00. you can't beat that with a baseball bat.

the bar charges the same prices for the restaurant food. i don't exactly recall their drink prices but they weren't outrageous to the point where i noticed.

Toro Loco in South Orange has good Mexican food.

The Parkwood Diner in Maplewood is surprisingly good. Their fish and vegetables are fresh, not frozen. And you get a free and perpetually-replenished appetizer salad.

Well, I don't think of it as a "hole-in-the-wall" but it's certainly not fine dining - but how about Carribean Cuisine? Can't beat the price for the quality of food.

Or maybe Nunzio's for some rice, beans, and ribs?

If you feel adventurous try Peruvian at Santa Barbara in Newark...Mt. Prospect Ave. Very good and very cheap.

Spicy and hot, but not the kind you'd find in Mexican joints. The peppers used are more complex in flavor than hot. Lots of fish, seafood, chicken, potatoes, and rice. Everything is delicious (and I'm not just saying that because I'm Peruvian...)

This is the best site I could find about the food...hope it encourages you!

Sully,
Nunzio's charcoal grill is on Springfield Ave. Pretty good chicken, decent rice & beans. Haven't tried the ribs, but they look good. There was a thread about this a while ago; I think someone posted the menu.

Alberto,
How do you get to the peruvian place? is it takeout? do they have the elusive peruvian chicken?

Mulfetta's in West Orange is the best hole-in-the-wall - Hell, best food I've ever had in my life.

Teensy place - 10 tables if that.

I sat next to Mick Jagger and a gorgeous Brunette who wasn't Jerry Hall 4 years ago. Jaggar played a few chords on the piano but didn't really sing.

Another time I'd just missed Billy Joel who played a half-hour on the keyboard they roll out for special occasions.

Mulfetta's has no sign, it's an ordinary house.

When the light is green on the porch they're open, red means closed and woe to you if you ring the bell on on a red night.

Drive down Main Street in West Orange, turn left at Tory Corner and look for the green and brick house with the light on the porch.

You are in for the best meal of your life, guaranteed

Squash blossoms sauteed in garlic and harvested while you order, real gravy on pasta, veal parm that melts in your mouth - melts in your mouth doesn't describe it.

Go - enjoy.

Aquaman,
Tory corner is an area, what street?? We are intrigued. Husband has worked in the area more than 15 years, his boss is a food maven, neither have heard of or seen it. This must be a rare find, please don't be pulling our legs. Don't want to "show up" at your relatives house for dinner!
