I need to take a group of about 15 students out for dinner in the city and need a restaurant with a private room. There will be a couple of speeches, so we do need a relatively peaceful environment. Any recommendations? Other preferences: midtown/village/downtown About 20-25 dollars a person Somewhat Classy Interesting Cuisine. Can anyone help me out here?!!

Jane on West Houston. The owner is incredibly nice and the food is good and has broad appeal. They have a beautiful private room downstairs that holds about 20 people, and they could probably work out a menu for you in your price range, depending on what you want. You could also try the bank vault at Blue Water Grill, though even the basic prix fixe menu there may be more than you want to spend. |

Vine, which I believe is on Wall Street has a cool private room where you actually sit in an old bank vault. You may want to look into that. |

Try Cucina di Pesce on 4th Street near 2nd Avenue. Really good and inexpensive Italian food. Depending on what day and what time, they have a room in the back that can fit more than 15. But I am not sure they would do it on a Friday or Saturday. 87 E. 4th Street 212-260-6800 |

bmpsab, Vine has been replaced with Bobby Vans Steakhouse. They have been closed for more about 6 months now. |

Ugh, cucina di pesce is gross. Bad Italian food for NYU students on a budget. And I got food poisoning after eating there once (I can't prove their food caused it, but I'm not taking any chances by going back). |

Tribeca Grill has a private room upstairs. Might be a little big for a 15-person group but you can ask. Same goes for Tavern on the Green. |

I think the 20-25 $$ a person is going to be your biggest obstacle. I do private dinners a lot (for work) and dessert is usually $20pp... |

Very true, eliz. I also plan a lot of corporate functions, and feel very fortunate when I can spend $80-100/person. |

Thanks everyone, I will look into your suggestions. Eliz and mim -- That may be true for corporate events, but I'm still hopeful a good meal can be had by us lesser mortals too. I have a few leads now that I'm working on that actually sound very good. Anyone have any experience with these restaurants -- they fall within my price range: En Japanese Brassiere Primitivo Osteria |

Keans Steakhouse in the West 30's has nice/cool private rooms comfortable for that size group and I don't think it is crazy expensive |

I do not think a restaurant in the city that is any good would give a room out for 15 people |

They will, but it might not cost $25 a person. Keen's is definitely not going to be in your budget. What about doing it in a restaurant that doesn't have a private room on a not busy night? In my younger years I attended numerous birthday dinners at restaurants in the east village where it was no more than $20-$25 a head for a prix fixe dinner and we commanded tables of twenty or so people with no problems whatsoever. Two places I can think of offhand are Radio Perfecto and Three Of Cups. I'm not even sure if they're still around, but I remember the food was fine and everyone always had a good time. Maybe you should look into places like that. Oh, and there is a private room at Jeollado, a seriously dirt-cheap sushi/Korean place on East 4th. They'll even set up karaoke for you. I personally like the "special sauce" they put on the sushi, but my husband claims it makes him ill. |
