We've got tickets for a Friday night performance and we haven't eaten in the Iron Bound section too recently, so we're looking for recommendations, either there or even closer to NJ PAC.

Just around the corner from NJPAC. Safe to walk to.

Savoy Grill, The 60 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102, 973-286-1700, This fine restaurant offers exquisite contemporary American cuisine that calls to mind the elegant 1930s, and also offers an upscale upstairs lounge in which one may relax, as well as offering catering services.

Thanks. These look interesting, and I'll check them out. Still interested in Iron Bound recs, too, though, so if anyone has one, please chime in.

I've said once and I'll continue to preach - Forno's is the bomb!!!

Right off Ferry St. not far of a walk but recommend driving, parking in the back is free.

We hade a lame-o pre-concert dinner at Maize a couple years ago; we ordered off their price-fix menu and the food was cold and seemed pre-made, like what you'd be served at a big wedding, definitely not made with love. The service was inattentive, unfriendly, & slow too. It wasn't cheap either. We really wanted to love the experience, but it was comically bad.

That's too bad amanda - doesn't sound good at all. I've eaten there twice and the food and service was very good (I can't remember what I had, but I can never remember what I had at a restaurant unless it was bad...).

The restaurant that's in NYPAC (name escapes me) is very pleasant. High ceilings, formal service, food hasn't disappointed me.

In the Ironbound section I recommend Iberia - right at the beginning of Ferry Street, past Penn Station.
But if you want to eat REAL portuguese food, I recommend Seabras - a great small restaurant off Ferry Street, on Madison Street. This is where all the local Portuguese eat - the food is the best on Ironbound (and I tried many restaurants around there), they serve big quantities and they have really good prices.

Iberia Peninsula
63-69 Ferry Street

Seabra's Marisqueira
87 Madison Street

Dave,

I heard there is a relatively new Spanish wine and tapas bar in Newark that may be owned in part by someone from Maplewood...any idea what and where it is? I have done some searches but to no avail...thought it might be on your radar.

Has anyone tried Don Pepe's? It's right across the street from NJPAC, also across from Robert Treat Hotel, toward the river. The Mariachi Band starts playing sometimes around eight o'clock on the weekends.
The paiella's pretty good. The service is very nice. It's nice at holiday time. Great murals!! Nice atmosphere...unless it's changed in one year or so.

I work really close to 27 Mix and have eaten many, many lunches and one dinner there in the short time since they've opened- nice bar and atmosphere, attentive waitstaff and consistantly tasty food. I don't feel like I'm in Newark there. But it's probably more of a hike from the PAC than your looking for though (it's close to the NEwark Museum). Calcada, the outside and less expensive restaurant at the PAC, is probably closed now (it's only opened during the milder months). Sebra's is great and The Savoy does a really nice job too. If you're in the mood for Italian, there's Pronto Cena at the Riverfront legal Plaza - it's been a while since I've eaten there, but I recall that the pasta was quiet fresh and the service was good too.

We actually ended out having dinner at Don Pepe's. It was an easy walk from the parking lots near NJPAC, we were happy with our meal - and the price was right - with a pitcher of Sangria, four of us ate for under $70. I'll keep all the other recommendations for future reference.
