I need pizza delivered to Maplewood tonight. With Primo closed, can you offer some suggestions. Phone numbers would be good, too, since I'll have to call from the train so my little trick or treaters have something to eat before we go. And if you the place can bring a nice pasta dish with vodka sauce, even better.

Thanks.

Frankie's Pizza that just opened up is fantastic!! Not sure of the number, think the number is on one of the threads, or it is still listed under it's old name Sunrise Pizza.

Maplewood Pizza on Valley Street delivers, and they have a fairly extensive pasta/sub/entree menu; their chicken parm is to die for!

I guess we have a reputation for not tipping? This restaurant says delivery is free but do not forget to tip the driver? I always give atleast $3.00 to the driver. But how tackie to tell us to do it!

I am sorry if I offended you. But I really do not understand your statement. I understand the delivery is free. It says do not forget to tip the driver. I always give at least $3.00 to delivery people. My point was I guess we have a reputation for not tipping otherwise why would it be mentioned in this ad. And to have to tell people to make sure they tip is tacky
And isn't a tip not manditory? I thought a tip was given based on the level of service recieved.
With the cost of gas what it is personally I believe there should be a delivery charge. If I want to stay home and have someone bring me my food I would gladly pay for the service...assuming it is done in a timely manner.

It is information posted to the page only. Why should you or anyone else be offended. It doesn't say you must tip, and at times some don't tip at all. We are simply saying remember when the delivery guy comes to your door, there is no built in cost for his presence. BUT, be mindful that a tip is considerate for having your meal delivered to you.

More importantly, the web administrator includes this message for all their merchants as an explanation as to whether there is a delivery charge or not.

I never said I was offended!
Personally I think if I want to sit at home in the dead of winter and not go out to pick up dinner I should have to pay for the delivery. Gas is expensive and it saves my time.
SO now the question is how much is a delivery worth? I do not believe it has anything to do with the cost of the food being delivered. I would think the delivery of the food should be at least $5.00 and should go only to the driver assuming you the business owner pay the driver as well or supply the car and gas. If the driver uses his or her own car, insurance and gasoline then the cost should be at least $5.00 and I would assume the business owner would pay a hourly salary of a per delivery dollar amount to the driver. All services have a cost and i would think if someone would not give the driver $3-$5 as a tip then they should go get their own food!

What's tacky about nudging people to tip? It's great that you always tip, but other people don't. Why are you taking this personally? Obviously if you always tip then it's not directed at you.

A lot of people aren't as in touch about tipping as you, Michael. Especially students, whom the site primarily targets. Some people think free delivery means tip not required.

cmonty thanks this is unbelievable!
If the drivers run into a problem where they are not getting tips then there should be a delivery charge! Obviously the business owner here is smart enough to cover themselves by saying minimum delivery is $15.00. The delivery person should be compensated accordingly. And Dave I agree with you a delivery is not FREE if you have to give a tip. SO I would think a delivery charge of 5.00 is very fair.

Michael: it is not the tip that bothers me. I just hate when I see the person driving up and down my street looking for the right house. No matter how many times the same delivery person comes he can't remember my house. I just wish the person who takes the order would listen when I tell her how to tell which house is mine.

red: you are right, except I tell the person who takes the order to tell the driver to look for a specific car and color that is parked in the driveway. Sometimes they write that on the box, other times they don't. I know I am the only house with a jeep on my block.
I delivered pizzas when I was in college. I never forgot a house after I was there a couple of times - especially if I got a good tip.

We ate in the Trattoria Friday evening. The place was packed.
There was 2 tables pushed together for a group of 8 or 9 young teen girls.
They ordereed from the menu's, no pizza slices, and stayed longer than they should have.
We're friendly with the waiter(ress) that had the horrible task of waiting on them.
Their bill was close to $85 and they only left a lousy $3 tip!
I wonder if these are any of your children MOL'ers?

Thank Pizzaz for posting a link to your menu online. I didn't realize you'd deliver more then pizza! When I told my sister she too was glad to hear this! It nice too that you remember your employees by reminding customers to tip them! Too many times the delivery people get forgotten!

Sleeping and Dave I agree with both of you! Sometimes people need that little nudge to remember, or they don't realize some places do not tack on a delivery fee, which the customer would end up paying anyway.

Not sure what mb's beef is. He didn't start the thread so why should he care what the response was? While he might be a good tipper, there are many more people who aren't.

I ate in the Trattoria on Saturday evening it is a better quality pizza place. I loved it! But when you go to a place like that you need to expect a casual crowd.
This is a perfect place for teens to eat and hang. Where else do they have to go that is affordable. As far as the tip well they should include a 15% tip with parties that large or the owner should give the waiter or waitress some extra money when that happens. $85.00 in that place is most likely $65.00 profit. He could have thrown the server $10.00.

The owner should suffer because the table is cheap? I don't think so. If there is any question about whether a table will tip or not, the tip should be added to the check.

I get not tipping for bad service, but we live in a time when the custom is to tip. If people don't agree with that then order food to go, don't waste the waiter's time.

Ok what if the food came out slow or with issues. Bad service is not always the fault of the waiter.
SO the waiter gets stiffed because the restaurant is a fault?
The reality of the situation is restaurants do not want to pay the servers for their work they want the customer to pay for it.

You think waiters would prefer to get paid a flat rate? Not a chance. There were a bunch of stories about this when Per Se switched to a mandatory service charge a few months ago. Tipping benefits waiters as much as anyone.

Maybe you just weren't a very good waiter? But seriously, you got a refund for the difference at the end of the year, right? An inconvenience for sure, but I bet most waiters still would prefer the current system.

Ordered Frank's pizza over the weekend. Not impressed at all. Very bland. We were surprised based on the good remarks we've heard.

Last week, we ordered Resevoir and were highly satisfied with the pie. It took an hour to get it delivered, though.

The owner is not suffering Mayor if you look at the big picture. When I was a waitor, I was the best, I had many people come into the restaurant because I was very good at what I did. The owners knew that, they knew that is how I made my living, so they would compensate me. I am not saying it is fair, but it was the gracious step for them to take, ensuring that I stayed for a long time.

RedY - That was very nice of them. All I am saying is that when you go out to eat you should tip, or don't go out at all. That was great of the owner to do that for you, but they shouldn't have to. The customer should have tipped you.

I absolutely agree. If you don't want to tip, you shouldn't go out.

That said, the best tip I ever got was when I first started waiting tables. This older couple came in every Sunday morning and ordered the same thing, and always tipped 10 cents. After weeks of waiting on them and remembering the order, they tipped me a quarter. I was really touched!

Many places add the tip onto the bill for large parties. That would seem to be the smart thing to do in cases like this ... especially with teenagers who rarely have a clue about tipping.

Well to start, you can choose to come down and partake in the Sunday NFL Ticket Pizza and Wings buffet - Bunny's shows five games at once.

For deliveries, choose from a garlic salad to hot spicy chicken wings pizza, the "MOLER" pizza deluxe (sausage, meatball, roni, fresh roasted pepper, onion and fresh garlic) or choose a variety of toppings to your liking. As for vegetarians, we have white pizza with ricotta and pesto and an assortment of veggie toppings. If you like your pies baked extra thin and extra crispy crust just ask. Deliveries start at 12:00 noon.

GO Giants.....

That's pretty low, but some chain restaurants pay even less. The worst I have heard was a friend of mine a few years ago was making $1.15. He got a raise eventually and made $1.79 an hour.

When I worked at a restaurant in 1983, the legal "restaurant minimum wage" was $2.04 per hour. I don't know if it's gone up, but probably. If it hasn't, then in some sense, the trat wages are fair, but I don't feel comfortable saying that. Mayor McCheese, your friend's story must be from before 1983.

At my restaurant job, they reported tips to the government as taxable, and they withheld, but I was making less in tips than they were reporting. THAT was not fair.

Look in any etiquette book anywhere...it is NOT customary to tip the owner of an establishment. I have been getting my hair cut at the Fickle Follicle in Millburn for almost 20 years, and have never once tipped the owner who cuts my hair...He's even told me when we've had this same discussion that he doesn't expect to be tipped.

I really like Arturo's pizza and sandwiches but I had to wait 80 minutes for 2 sandwiches last week when I was told 30-40 minutes. I rarely see Arturo's as crowded as the Trattoria, but on this night it was really hopping. I don't think the staff are used to that type of volume, because they seemed confused. I'm always amazed that the Trattoria staff can make sense of the mayhem. They sure work hard. The Arturo's staff moves much more deliberately, regardless of the situation. Here's hoping that their business will increase and the staff will improve.

i love Arturo's pizza but it invariably takes at least an hour to get it delivered no matter what they tell you. I always call an hour before I want to eat.

Grr...I think you are correct in stating that the OWNER of an establishment should not expect a tip, however when you are eating in a restaurant you are most likely not being served by the owner.

Ordered from Resevoir Sat night. The pizza wasn't that good, and it took 1 hr and 11 minutes for it to arrive. And such small portions, too!

I'm thinking about making pizza at home. I know Di Peitro on Springfield Ave sells fresh pizza dough.

At that point, how hard can it be to make dough yourself?

I often buy dough at the Trattoria or Roman Gourmet. It's like $5 for 2
