Four couples wanted to go to the Ironbound last night and after reviewing a bunch of posts about Fornos we decided to go there.

Atmosphere was ok. We sat at a round table in a corner, which was great. The only negative was the table of smokers next to us who chain smoked through their meal.

Sangria: I've had much better. I MAKE much better. Tasted totally watered down.

Food: As typical, a dizzying menu. Salad at table, ok. Green leaf lettuce instead of iceberg, a plus.
I chose a 2lb broiled lobster...the smallest available. It was just ok. Didn't try the veggies because my fork was taken away (I'm a slow eater). Managed a spoonful of rice from the serving spoon (!!!). Again, typical. My husband got the recommended stuffed pork chops. He said it was overcooked.

Desserts & cappuccino. Cap. was fine. Desserts were overpriced. I had the chocolate lava cake, I liked it but my husband didn't. I left hungry (didn't fill up on bread or rice.)

So, why does everyone rave about this place?

It wasn't bad, it was ok. No better or worse than Iberia IMO, but certainly not as good as Fernandes.

I always have had good food at Spanish Tavern. Sangria is pretty good, anything fra diavolo is usually very good.

VIG--if there's a next time, try Casa Vasca. I used to work in Newark and always thought it was much better than Fornos.

p.s. Smoking is ALWAYS an issue at all the restaurants in the Ironbound. They all seem to allow smoking :-(

I like Don Pepe's, on McCarter Highway just north of Raymond Boulevard in Newark. The atmosphere is nice, the waitstaff professional, and the garlic shrimp is the best!!

I love Casa Vasca, but it is very crowded on weekends and even with a reservation you often have to wait quite a while.
virtual it girl: I prefer green leaf lettuce to iceberg if they are going to use only one type. I don't think they are doing it to be cheap, becaue I think iceberg is the cheapest lettuce you can buy.

Mrosner, I agree on the green leaf thing. That was a plus over the iceberg I have often seen. Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant.
