Hi! I am hoping to head out there next Spring for a wedding and a few bottles of Chianti....but Italy direct flights go to Rome - has anyone done the road trip up to Florence from there?

Travelling with 2 little ones. Wedding is just south of Florence. Hoping to get a villa in Tuscany for the week - all recommendations gratefully received!

Thanks MOL

Have only taken the train from Rome to Firenze. If renting a car in Italy is anything like renting a car in Ireland I don't think you should have a problem, however I'm sure you can get a connecting flight to Firenze from Rome once you land there.

Personally, I think a road trip would be a better experience. It can't be more than a 3 or 4 hour trip in a FIAT to Firenze from Rome.

Lucky you! I found Florence a most charming place. More impressive than Venice in my opinion.

Keep your eye on the blend architectural add-ons over the centuries. The church is amazing. Visit the David sculpture. Enjoy.

Roma to Firenze 4 hrs 3.50 if you leave directly from DaVinci . Gas is about $6.00 a gallon . Most of the rental cars are diesel & get great mileage. Highway all the way untill the outskirts of Florence . It's a great drive . After the wedding you'll need the car to visit Siena. BTW some of the best sandwiches & cafe I have ever had is @ Italian rest stops.

Just came back 6 wks. ago. (Boy, it feels like 6 mos.) Flew into Rome, took the train to Florence. Very easy. I would do it with kids! We did the touristy bus tour, where you buy a ticket and can use it to get on or off at anytime for 24 hours. This would be perfect to get acclimated and also acts as a cab when the children get tired of walking.

PL me if you need more info.....

Absolute magic -- time travel straight to the Renaissance. I'd tell you to fly from Milan, but if you're renting in the country, you'll need the car, so fly to Rome or Milan and rent.
Ditch the car in Firenze, however. You just have to walk (and it's totally do-able -- not a big place).
Favorite site (not that you asked) -- monastery of San Marco. Full of Fra Angelico frescoes.

Just got back from Rome last week and I think it would be easier to just jump a train from the airport and worry about the car later in Firenze.
Last time in Firenze we were able to rent a little Fiat Panda no problem.
Great day trips from there.

Drive up the hill from Firenze to Fiesole...
nice little town with an Etruscan ruin.
We stayed at a wonderful place there,
PENSIONE BENCISTA.

Well worth the 30 minute excursion.

For a rental try:http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/europe/italy#1276

Google vacation rentals in Europe and you should find even more sites.

Rent your car from a US company, we went to Ausrtia last year and it was much cheaper than from an European co. I used an internet co, something like e-european cars.com or something like that. We got upgraded to a Volvo too.

I'm green with envy!!!!

There's an alternate, more senic road than the Autostrada. If you have time, it skirts some wonderful hill towns that are definitely worth a stop. Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, Siena, San Gimangiano.

We rented a villa for 2 weeks in Panzano, about an hours drive from Florence. Probably not a good sollution for you. Try to find time to visit Greve. If you're into food, there is the most wonderful butcher shop in the world right on the main square. Buona fortuna.
