I just saw a new Thai/Malaysian restaurant in Springfield, in the same strip mall as Super Foodtown. I have no connection to the joint...just reporting its existence.

Went there last night with the wife. Since it was Tues., we had the whole place practically to ourselves. Service was attentive and not intrusive. Since it was our first time, we thought that we would stick to the basics: (1) roti canai; (2) pad thai; and (3) sizzling beef. They were all delicious, especially the pad thai. The dishes had a Malaysian twist to them. For dessert, you must have the banana pancake with ice cream. YUMMMMM! It's quite large so two can share. Eric was absolutely correct about "good and cheap." Amateur, to get there, go down Springfield Ave. toward Route 22. Make a right at the light on Morris Ave., where the CVS is located. It's about aquarter mile down on your left in the strip mall with the Foodtown. If you pass the next light on Morris Ave., you've gone too far. To answer my own question, they do not have a liquor license.

VIG, I haven't been to Morris Thai so cannot comment. However, it's definitely cheaper than Khun Thai. IMHO, Khun Thai is over-priced for what they serve, good but not great food. With this new place, literally down the street, I will not go to Khun Thai anymore.

No it is not better than Morris Thai, and the price is comparable. They do offer more dishes than Morris and have Sushi as well. I ate there once and thought my dish was decent, the wife liked hers better. I will definately go their again but I'm not ready go nuts over their food/price. |

We tried it tonight. Again, it was not at all crowded, but very nice and welcoming. We both liked everything we had - my only disappointment was that they don't have "curry puffs" (those samosa-like puff pastries filled with veggies and potatoes). I've always be able to find them in Thai restaurants before. But the Thai Spring roll was a very delicious alternative. We'll definitely go back. |

Better than Morris Thai, no question. Excellent flavor, fresh ingredients. If you want spicy, better tell 'em so ... since "spicy" on the menu really isn't. The rice could be better, but the noodle dishes are great. If you even THINK you like Thai food, please try this place .... it's nearby and if enough of us go there, they won't close, or turn into yet another chinese or japanese cuisine only establishment. |

Dego Diva, The easiest way is to follow Springfield Avenue all the way past Home Depot, past Route 78, and turn right on Morris Avenue. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but there will be a CVS on the corner of Springfield and Morris. The strip mall will be on your left in about half a mile. |

Best Thai in the area, by far. Totally agree with marken about the "spicy." But the flavors were great. I told the new owner that I hoped the food was good because you can't get any decent red curry around, and he said that is exactly why he opened the restaurant. And I didn't need a collared shirt to eat there! |

Tried it this weekend. Had the pad thai, which is my standard unit of measurement for any Thai restaurant. Ingredients were fresh, and it wasn't bad. I'd like a bit more flavor and spicyness, though. My other standard unit of measurement is to ask the restaurateur what he or she would recommend. He recommened a curried beef. I'd get that again. I enjoyed it. As for the Malaysian side of the menu, they didn't have kari mee, which is a favorite in our household. I asked about it, and he said it's on the menu in their other restaurant. We'll go back, but I'll have to check out the Malaysian restaurant in Hoboken to see if they have kari mee. |

Tried it last week. It's much nicer inside than you would expect from a strip mall restaurant. Service was slow especially since there were only 3 other tables in the place. But I'd much rather slow service than rushed service. Had the beef, curried pancakes. They were very tasty. Also had pad thai which was very good. I was dissappointed with the chicken yellow curry. Not only was it not white meat chicken, it was not cooked fully...some of the thick pieces were still raw on the inside. That turned me off. Hopefully it was a one time deal. Next time I order, I will specify that I want white meat chicken. Overall, I like the menu and it's priced well. Will definitely try again.

Got the same menu and coupons as you VIG. Actually they refer to themselves (besides the under new ownership!) as authentic Malaysian and Thai Cuisine. For those who want a phone number, exact address, etc.: Pinang Taste, 201 Morris Avenue, Springfield. 973.379.3393. Looks quite good. The menu, combined with the above comments, will help towards convincing my husband that Thai food is "OK" to have/try. Sheesh (that sheesh directed to my husband, btw, so don't go crazy). Oh, and for the directionally challenged - listen to your elders. They're right. Staight shot down Springfield, past HD and hook a right on Morris. The restaurant will be on your right before the next light. |

You can use Mapquest or Google to find it. I checked both and they're accurate. The restaurant in the 200 block of Morris Avenue, Springfield NJ, located in the General Green Shopping Center. In fact, the camera shop, located across the street, is 200 Morris Avenue, Springfield NJ. If you can't find it after all that, then you are so locationally challenged that you should stay home. Otherwise, you could inadvertently wind up in Kansas. |

My husband & I went Saturday night and it was really good. We had the roti cani, beef rendang and pad thai. We asked the rendang be made fairly spicy and they did (after making sure we really wanted it spicy). The pad thai was marked spicy, but really wasn't. We'll definitely be going back - the price was great as well as the food. |

OK, I found it! Yeah!! We just had dinner there, and here's the good and the bad: The Good: The prices were fair, and the atmosphere was very good, cosidering it's in a strip mall. We started with the Thai Spring Rolls. The were very tasty - better than I've had at some other places. But be sure you know which ones you're getting - there's another type of spring roll on the menu that is steamed, so say you want the crispy ones. Also, they don't come with sauce, so ask for some if you want it. For my entree, I had the pinapple chicken, and I remembered to ask for white meat only. It came with a nice thick red sauce, and the flavor was excellent, but I would have liked a bit more pinapple in it. We had the Malaysian Iced Tea, which is a milky, sweet tea, and it was fine, if not a bit too sweet. The bad: Well, I'm sorry to say that the "bad" was pretty darn bad. First bad thing: the ice water tasted like onions or curry or something - it was simply undrinkable. I ordered a lemonade, which turned out to be just water with sugar and two pieces of lemon squeezed into it. It wasn't good. My husband had the green curry veggies. There was so little green curry paste in it that we questioned if it was really curry. It litterally tased only of coconut milk and butter. When we asked if they could put more curry paste in it, they refused, saying that we needed to specify that ahead of time. My husband explained that he has never had to specify that green curry actually TASTE like green curry. The waiter just stood there, making no offer to rectify the situation in any way. It was really a shame, because the veggies were quite nice, but the sauce just ruined the dish. All in all, it was good enough for us to give it another chance, but so far, not better that Penang in East Hanover or Morris Thai or Ginger Taste. |

Having lived in SE Asia for a long period of time, it's great to have another option nearby. Was excited when I learned about Pinang Taste from this board. Because I am generally pretty skeptical about Malaysian restaurants in the U.S. we only ordered a few relatively 'safe' dishes that are less likely to disappoint. Got the house special tofu dish, the belachan kangkong (water spinach with chilli-based sauce) and the Malaysian ribs. Overall we were pretty happy although not wow-ed. It's definitely a place I would go back again to try other stuff and I'm glad to have an option closer to home than Penang on Route 10 (although if I had to pick a better place, Penang would have to be my choice for now). |

I've been there a couple of times now. We ordered basic stuff, and all were good. My kids love the Roti canai, so we need to get a couple of orders of that. The chicken satay was also pretty good. The beef rendang needs to be spicier. I should have done what hismom did and requested that it be truly spicy. I used chili sauce, and that made it better :-). All in all, it was an ok meal. By the way, they do deliver now. |

I enjoyed the Thai restaurant. It is on Morris Ave. Another landmark is the white church across the street. (That church is famous as the site of The Reverend James Caldwell's exhortation, "Give 'em watts, boys." During the Revolution when the Yanks were running out of wadding for their muskets. Caldwell took the hymnals out of his church and gave them to the Americans to tear up and use. There is a town in New Jersey named after the reverend but I don't remember its name.) Anyway, also try the soup with chile paste added. Really good. I did not like the roti type appi. which had meat and scallions and onions. |

Tried it last night. Revisited MOL to see if our experiences matched. I think they did. We had Roti Canai, Pad Thai and Thai Basil chicken. Also had banana shakes. I thought roti canai decent (pancakes, or whatever you call them very good, sauce could use a little more flavor), pad thai good - maybe they're reading this, it was spicier than I usually get - and chicken basil was disappointing, but the meat was all white and well cooked. Disappointment was there was syrupy sauce on it - reminded me of Chinese more than Thai. Try the shakes - they reminded us of the shakes we had in Thailand. A not too sweet, healthy treat. Definitely a good resource - please check it out. I give them an A+ on atmosphere. John Caffrey - is that a dry sense of humor? I think there are at least 2 maybe more towns named for The Reverend, kind of like the Oranges. |

We had take-out last night. We enjoyed all the dishes, though the shrimp and squid dish (was a specialty) could have used a bit more squid. Enjoyed the flavors and the vegetables were good. Also got the pad thai, which was good— fresher, less greasy and overall better than the take-out pad thai from Ginger Taste IMO. Got the green curry vegetables and was surprised to get the steamed veggies separate from a large container of sauce, so I generously poured the sauce over and let it sit while we ate the pad thai. I loved the flavor of the green curry, it was flavorful and just spicy enough without me needing white rice or a lot of water. I have never been to Penang on Rt. 10, but I enjoyed this a lot and would definitely eat in...my husband said the place was very nice inside. I found the prices reasonable, comparable to a lot of Chinese eateries in the area, but the food was higher quality than the run of the mill joints. |

Finally went to Pinang tonight for a Valentine's Dinner with the kids. We got quite an assortment of dishes: miso soup, shrimp tempura, a Samurai roll, california roll, crab sashimi, a fried squid dish, and green curry vegetables. Everything was delicious. The miso soup was very flavorful and had lots of tofu and seaweed. Shrimp tempura was ALL shrimp, about 10 pieces of medium shrimp, which my picky 7.5 yo loved (ate almost all of it!). The rolls were great, fish tasted very fresh. My 9yo said the californoa roll was the best she ever had. Baby ate all her crab sashimi. The squid was incredible, very fresh and delish with just enoug spiciness. Green curry vegetables were perfect, I took home all the extra sauce and will toss it with some veggies and rice for myself. Enjoyed it so much we got dessert. Lots of ice cream for the girlies and fried ice cream/bananas for us. Mmmmmm. Plus, I tried the malasian iced coffee which was really good. (Had to share with the hubby.) I am hopeful to have many more delicious meals at this place, with and without our kids. The atmosphere was nice. Tables were well spaced apart. Parking is very convenient. for our family it was great to have the combo of dishes because everyone was happy. Service was friendly. |

I was surprised at the leisurely pace of that family (you?) given the little one. We enjoyed the food too - Basil Chicken (Gaprow?) was the best dish. We went to Pinang based on the recs of this board and my craving for Pad Thai. The good and the bad: Food: We got the Roti Canai based on recs here and it was super yummy. Pad Thai, on the spicy side, was just mediocre. We also got the Buddhist Yam Pot which was interesting and different. Not sure I would get it again, but that's just a personal preference, not because it wasn't good. Drinks: Loved my pineapple juice. We both hated husband's coconut drink. Dessert: Got fried ice cream and bananas (I wanted the banana pancake but husband won out). Was pretty yummy. Ambience: Good. Very family friendly. We were there with the kid but three other families were. Biggest complaint. IT WAS FREEZING! Overall: Would go again and try more of the curry dishes. |

Greenetree, Pinany Taste is really Malaysian more so than anything else even though they have a few Thai dishes and make sushi. You'll probably be disappointed if you go there looking for Thai but for a Malaysian restaurant it's pretty good if you don't feel like hiking all the way to Penang on Route 10. But I am intrigued by Bangkok Kitchen and will check it out. Morris Thai is reasonably good but I've been spoiled by Thai in NYC and haven't found a Thai restaurant to rave about in NJ. |

While we're talking Thai, I ate at a new restaurant in Westfield recently. Splash of Thai. I thought it was very good. Thai Thai is still my favorite, but the owner changed recently. The food is still great, but the new owner isn't as nice as the previous owner, and I heard that he no longer takes reservations for small parties. I meet a friend of mine there for lunch, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

Ryan. I'd say Morris Thai will run you about $25/$30 per couple for two courses, depending on what you order. Very reasonable, IMHO! |
