Since our last few "vacations" have been very mission-oriented (attend memorial service with family out west, embark on furniture shopping marathon in NC), my husband and I are in need of a vacation from our vacations. Just a long weekend - probably after the holidays at this point - to chill and decompress without any children or family or obligations. The ideal place would be some sort of Inn/B&B with a fireplace in the room, but also a bar downstairs where we could go for a drink at night. Does such a place exist? I don't even care much where it is, as long as we can drive there within a few hours.

I highly recommend the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck, NY. I've stayed there with my husband many times (he went to school nearby) and I've always loved it. The tavern downstairs has great food and a fine bar with a big hearth -- perfect for sipping a port or a cognac before bed. Very Revolutionary War-period quaint. And the town of Rhinebeck is charming with lots of shops, plus there are plenty of nearby towns with fantastic restaurants and old historic homes to tour. I think it's about a two-hour drive from the city.

Also, there's the New Hope area, which is a bit closer. One time we stayed at a place on the PA side in Erwinna (I think) called the Golden Pheasant. It was a B&B with a great restaurant downstairs and fireplaces in the rooms. It was run by a French chef and his wife. Very lovely people.

Once again, I must recommend www.thesettlersinn.com

"Many rooms offer fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, and DVD players." This is a quote taken directly from the "Lodging" page of the website.

There is a restaurant and separate bar right downstairs, as well as a nice common "Living Room" with a fireplace.

Best of all, it's just under 2 hours drive, mostly on slow, scenic roads through northwest New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania.

I've so wanted to stay there myself, but am unable to justify doing so since my family's vacation home is 10 minutes away on Lake Wallenpaupak.

Apparently, they also have a really great sister property in Bethlehem PA, which is probably also only a couple hours from here--although I know nothing about it other than what's on the website. There's a link to the Sayre Mansion on the homepage of The Settler's Inn website.

Last February the hubby and I went for a long weekend in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. There are an abundance of B&B's out there. We had a fireplace in our room, but there was no bar in the inn. Only problem there is it can be a bit of a drive to get there--probably in the neighborhood of three hours, or more, depending on traffic. Here's a link to the place we stayed: http://www.innattwinlinden.com/

Here's one of the scenic photos from our trip:

We love Litchfield, CT about 2 1/2 hour from here. Check out the Tollgate Inn www.tollgatehill.com. Charming inn with cozy tavern. Cute restaurants, antique shops, etc nearby.

The Inn at Montchanin Village (www.montchanin.com) down in Wilmington is also lovely, and a little over two hours from here. The restaurant is excellent, and Winterthur and several other museums are nearby.

I love the Lambertville Inn in Lambertville NJ. We went there for our ten year, and it was beautiful. Fireplace in the room. Fireplace in the Jacuzzi room, great bar downstairs. Wonderful stores to walk around and great restaurants!

Then again there's always Cape May. Lovely any time of year. Our favorite, although we haven't been in a while, www.mainstayinn.com. Fabulous, fabulous. Breakfast is yummy, the decor is spectacular victorian. Host and hostess are always wonderful. If you stay in Cape May, you must try one or both of these restaurants: 410 Bank Street (http://www.capemaytimes.com/Restaurants/cape-may/410bank.htm) and their sister restuarant, Frescoes (http://www.capemaytimes.com/Restaurants/cape-may/frescos.htm). Better call to make sure their open in January, as some places close down for a couple months in the "off season." And, being it is the "off season" it shouldn't take more than 2.5 hours to get there.
