Any recommendations for nice restaurants in Jersey City? Greek, tapas, mexican, or any other interesting foods would be great. Thanks! |

You MUST go to the Canton Tea Garden just off JSQ on Bergen!! It's an old time, 30-40's, place with Chinese decor, dance floor and bar. Food's great too. It's on the second floor, and all of the staff are ancient, but work anyway!! They move like molassas, we called one gentleman 'Flash' because he moved so slow. The kids LOVED it! Great place fo an event. We trek back for Vietnamese on Newark Ave, PhoTan Hoi, or whatever incarnation it is this week. We used to go once a week. Don't miss the 'hood though. |

Pronto Cena or the Iron Monkey down by Exchange Place. Komegashi (Japanese), also by Exchange Place. No Greek to be found in JC last I heard, but Ali Baba on Washington in Hoboken is our favorite. We miss it greatly, and make regular pilgrimages for a fix. Nothing fancy, but the food is delish. |

I'll second Iron Monkey, even though I haven't been there in a while. Although they did have live jazz playing so loud downstairs one of the times that it was almost impossible to hear the waiter speak, and we were on the second floor! Oddfellows is a good, casual cajun place near Exchange Place. I love a cold TurboDog with some chicken etouffeé from there. http://www.oddfellowsrest.com/

Thanks all! Great suggestions. Now I just have to figure out what we're really in the mood for. It's a night away at the Hyatt in Jersey City while the inlaws watch the kids. After all the heavy food on Thanksgiving and leftovers, something on the lighter side (Greek or tapas) seems perfect. |

Mr. T, we lived right across the park from the Ale House. What years and years did you go there? I/we were there from 87 to 98. What did the article say about the Ale House? |

Let's see...we started to go to the Ale House in '88, just before my son was born. We took Henry there in his stroller from the week he was born, and usually sat up front by the windows. We went there very regularly, with the kids, until we moved from the Hamilton Park neighborhood (300 Pavonia 'tween Monmouth and Coles) up to the Lincoln Park neighborhood in '97. We still went there sometimes after that. Maggie (and Luba) always (and still) treated my 2 kids wonderfully, allowing them to run around the place at 5 yrs and older and let them help take food and checks to people's tables. Now Henry is 16 and taller than me - when Maggie sees him, she smiles that ironic smile, shakes her head and says "man, I been here a looooong time." 2 years ago we moved here and only stop in ocassionally (I go there for a drink on my own sometimes) and we're always greeted like we're still regulars. I guess you can say my kids grew up there. Also, since my wife is English, she always liked to have a local "pub" to go to for a light meal, fish and chips, bangers and mash, etc. and a drink. The Ale House was it. We always called it "the pub" even tho' it was "the Ale House." Now, guess where our "pub" is? The essay in the Times from Sunday is headlined "Maggie's Wonderful Saloon." Kinda says it all. |

I've been going to the Ale House since the early 90s, but less frequently these days. I know the developer of the Park Foundry across the street and still have a remote to get in and out of the gated lot across the street. |

When I lived in JC, my husband and I loved Marco and Pepe on Grove Street. Their menu changes, but I believe it is posted online. Check www.marcoandpepe.com. They serve their entrees in tapas size portions, and their wine selection is excellent. The food can be pretty rich, though.

There is a very good sushi place , I think it's called Grand Banks ? across from the main PO , you could walk from the Hyatt. For Italian & fish there is allways Casa Dante on Newark Av. |

I have to say, most of the time I was in JC I was doing the young singles scene in NYC, so I didn't spend a lot of time at the Ale House. It was a nice place to walk to on occasion for a drink with neighbors, my condo association sometimes held our meetings there, and I think I went there for brunch (?) a couple times. Don't know it nearly as intimately as Mr. T. And it seems to me a lot of the restaurants mentioned here weren't in existence when I lived in JC. It's just not right. All the good stuff happens after I leave. |

Mr T, Luba and my wife have been good friends for a long time so we see her quite often. I shouldn't tell her I forgot to put in a good word for the Ale House in my first post though! I always like it there. |

Mr N., I'm sure if you ask Luba about Henry and Olivia, she'll smile. Anyway, I'm with you, Iron Monkey is one of my favorites in JC. Believe it or not, we had a Friday-night-before-the-Bar-Mitzvah dinner there. It was near the hotel where alot of folks were stying. And I dig Pronto Cena. |

Judi, I work in the building adjacent to the Hyatt, so I'm very familiar with the area. First, the restaurant right in the Hyatt is exceptional. But, if you want to get out of the hotel, there are two excellnet places right across the street - Porto Leggero is a GORGEOUS Italian restaurant, with some of the most delicious food. It's perfect for a romantic dinner, and the prices are not too bad. Even if you don't get to have dinner there, at least go for an after dinner night cap. It's really a beautiful place. If you're up for something more exotic, Amiya Indian is right in the same building as the Italian place. Hands down the best Indian I've had outside of the city. Don't let the fact that these two place are in an office building sway you - both are top notch. |

If you're willing to go expand your search to Hoboken, try Lua, the new nueva Latina place on Frank Sinatra at 14th. |

So Judy, where'd you eat? How was the Hyatt? I'm intrigued and thinking of planning an overnight there (in the old stomping grounds, as it where). |

Me- We had a great time at the Hyatt. Very nice hotel (modern decor) with an incredible view of Manhattan. We had the "romantic package" with chocolate covered strawberries, champagne and breakfast in the am. Nice fitness room but small pool. Good, upscale hotel for a quiet overnight. For dinner we took your suggestion and went to Ali Baba. I'm addicted!!! GREAT food and very friendly servers. So, a wonderful night all around. Thanks all for the suggestions. Judi |

Jersey City, good and cheap. Brownstone Diner on Grand Street across from the new medical center. Probably the best hot pastrami sandwich in N.J. |
