This topic comes up frequently - you might want to try the search feature. My favorites are Verjus (Springfield AVe Maplewood) and Raymond's in Montclair (byo). For upscale special occasions the SHort Hills Hilton.

The Sunday before last I went to the Short Hills Hilton for the buffet brunch. I was impressed with the variety of things to eat and they kept topping up my champagne glass (I'd already had a Bloody Mary which was quite strong). My husband is teetotal but his empty champagne glass was topped up whilst we away from the table getting food. Of course I couldn't waste the champagne in his glass so I drank it. I had a wonderful time hic hic.... LOL! You don't have to have the alcohol - I think the buffet without alcohol was about $26 or $28 but in case you are tempted it's best to agree to have a designated driver on hand or to go by taxi. There wasn't any music or strolling minstrels....but it was entertaining enough for us as it seemed that a large contingent of what seemed to be a Mafia family took over some neighbouring tables...it really was like the 'Sopranos' in our midst (and they'd just been to the Mall so had their Hugo Boss bags etc.) so we had fun trying to identify the 'Godfather' etc. There was also a 'Sweet Sixteen' party a few tables along too. For the amount of food and drink we had and of excellent quality I thought the price was very reasonable at $104 inc tax for the two of us. I didn't dare ask for a doggy bag though! |

Been by there a couple of times on Sunday...but to no avail. Their hours seemed to have changed. Use to be able to walk in at 9 or 10 and sit down. They always seem closed now. |

Speaking of Terra, are they doing anything for Thanksgiving? I know it's another post already, but I'd love to get some side dishes and am not really a fan of New World. |

"Scotty's" at the junction of Millburn Ave and Morris Ave in the border of Short Hills/Springfield (opposite the Wine Library) does an all-you can eat Sunday brunch. I think it costs around $15.

Hi All, I've been meaning to post more often, and this thread made me decide to get off my butt and type! Yep, we're still doing Sunday Brunch at Terra. I've kept on some of the old A-Fare favorites like the meatloaf and gnocchi, adding in new items like Creamy Southern Grits and Biscuits and Gravy. (Something homey and comforting about Southern food -- works great for a brunch... We'll have Country Ham this weekend for instance) $16 prix fixe, 12-3:30. Mary, I was around a lot when Ed had American Fare, and don't recall him being open that early (9 or 10). I'll have to check into that out of curiosity! Although this is a little late regarding Thanksgiving (I'm typing this the morning AFTER Turkey Day) we were offering sides for the Holiday, and will be doing the same for Christmas (pick-up on Friday 12/23) So for those interested, give us a call. Also watch for some midwwek comfort food options. I've been scanning these boards for some time now, and have seen a lot of "comfort food" discussions. So, in addition to our more traditional items, we'll be trying out some things like Chicken and Dumplings, Brunswick Stew, and maybe a good Burger to go along with the comfort items already on the menu like the Meatloaf, Southern Shephard's Pie, etc. Hope this info helped, Pete |

Will there be more standard Brunch options, like Eggs Benedict, French Toast, etc? And is the brunch "family friendly?" We went to AFare several times for brunch and really enjoyed it.

A vote for an eggs benedict choice without pork for those of us who don't eat it! Every now and then I've had a nice one with smoked salmon (but usually on vacation!) |

Sunday brunch was amazing, we had a party of 7 people and everybody brought a bottle of bubbly,(I brought two), we ended up staying for dinner if only because no one wanted to drive. I don't recall exactly what I ate for brunch, but I did drink a little too much champagne. Dinner though was out of this world, Cassoulet, as good as it gets in Toulouse, better because I did'nt get jet lag. I miss the charcuterie plate that the previous owner had, but I understand that the new chef trained with him and he will bring it back. ps. the bread was very fresh

"The Sunday before last I went to the Short Hills Hilton for the buffet brunch. ...I think the buffet without alcohol was about $26 or $28 " I am looking for brunch ideas for 4 girlfriends anywhere from morristown to montclair. I called the Short Hills Hilton and unfortunately, the above is not the case. Brunch is $48 per adult. Bummer. I really wanted to try it and would have definitely gone if it were less without alcohol. Any other (cheaper) ideas? I don't want to go to Raymond because I refuse to wait on line for brunch since leaving NYC! I am currently considering Verjus and Rod's Steakhouse. Any other suggestions? thanks!

Great place for brunch is Willies Taverne in Bedminister. It's an easy ride and brings you into the "country". They have a great buffet with the usual (including eggs benedict etc) and always a meat choice, wonderful desserts and it is large enough for groups. They have several separate rooms and the last time it was about $14.00 which included a mimosa. Give it a try you shouldn't be disappointed. |

Went to Sunday brunch at the Village Cellar and it was great! The upscale atmosphere was there but was very child friendly. The children were walking back and forth from the various food stations and the staff was great with them. A really nice place for a lovely family brunch. |

They had an omlet station, a carving station, fruit, salad, muffins, pastas, sausage, bacon, meatlaof, (thats all I remember but there was more). It was I believe $25 for the adults and $9.99 for the kids. I didn't pay the bill but I think a Mamosa was included. |

Now why would somewhere like the Village Cellar have a lame brunch buffet? Very disappointing. It's the perfect place to have a NY-style brunch menu with eggs benedict, Bloody Marys, etc. Seems like a real wasted opportunity to me. Why is it so hard to get a real brunch around here? |

They have bloody Mary's (saw the menu at the grand opening). The buffet looked pretty good to me with a lot of fresh choices. I don't see the need for hundreds of choices as long as the food is good (and it was). And the last thing I would want at a buffet is poached eggs that have been sitting around. That should be an item ordered off of a menu so you know it is cooked to order. Not sure why you have to criticize a place without at least checking it out. |

Not criticizing it. I just don't get the whole fascination out here with brunch buffets. As you point out, the food sits around, and it tends to be pretty boring food. Why can't they have a normal brunch menu with six good, interesting options and a drink included? With so many people moving here from NYC, I don't get why more restaurants wouldn't serve a normal NY brunch, which is incredibly common and popular on the other side of the river. Here, it's all buffets. I'm not criticizing the Village Cellar, per se. Just the lack of a decent normal brunch in the immediate area. Verjus has a good brunch, but otherwise you have to go to Montclair. |

You can always go back to NY...Maybe this is just a Jersey thing, like Diners or Salt Water Taffy. Maybe it's some sort of a touchstone for folks..They like being able to compare the same meals at different places they go to. I like to rate different resorts by the quality of the brunch you get on the American plan...That's why I'll never go back to Caneel Bay on St. John. The food overall there is excellent, but the brunch buffet in the morning was definitely an afterthought... |

Ok, but sounded like a knock on something you have not seen. I am not a buffet fan mostly because I never eat enough to justify the cost (and I rarely drink alcohol). Of course, if you really want a large choice in buffets, one should go to Las Vegas. My gut tells me most families don't want to spend a lot of money on brunch (or breakfast) which is why there are so few options. In NYC or Hoboken, there are a lot of young couples and singles that don't have the same concerns (or kids).

I thought there was a nice NY atmospher at the VC but what I liked the most was that the kids had a good time. Most people who live around here moved out of the city to start a family life. Eat where you want I just wanted to share my experience. I saw many people drinking even though it was 1 in the afternoon, and some ordering from the menu. I just liked that everyone I was with got what they wanted and had a good time. |

We had Brunch at Voro when the weather was nice. Sat outside. Had Bloodies, eggs benedict, felt really good. Fed myself, my wife and my son. We kept saying how we'd have to do this more often. It was around $80! Now I buy Major Peter's Bloody Mary mix and get bagels at Hot Bagels abroad. We do THAT more often. |
