Looking for recommendations for a vacation rental outside of Barcelona, preferably near the beach. This will be for a fairly big crowd -- 15 people or so. Two places seem like they have some big houses to rent -- Sitges (south of Barcelona) and Gerona (to the north). Anyone been to these towns or know anything about them? Other recommendations in the area?

I went to Sitges about 10 years ago. It was a great vacation place. We stayed in a hotel though. Great hidden little beaches as well as the main beach, plenty of "life" but not as much of an urban metropolis as Salou. And a bit of culture too. FWIW There's a good selection of gay and straight bars.

Tossa de Mar is also nice to north of Barcelona(Near Lloret de Mar which is a busy high rise place)

Both Tossa and Sitges have old towns with a bit of charm and atmoshere!

Check them out on Virtourist.com - photos and info listed on both in Catalonia section (under Spain)

Girona is a gorgeous 15th century town. Don't think it's on the beach, but when I was last there (15 years ago) utterly charming. So many hills that the Tour de France teams train on the streets of the town. Wonderful place.

Thanks for the info. Because we're a big crowd, we want to have the option of cooking at home and are shying away from urban areas. If it helps to know details, I'm expecting that we'll have about 4 children (ages 6-16), as many as 3 young adults (20-23) and 8 adults (early 40s to 55ish).

We're also thinking about Tuscany as a backup plan, as there seems to be a wide range of "villas" there. We'd prefer Spain if we can get something there that we like and can afford.

Hey...you never know! I've found a gorgeous place in Sitges, but at 7000 euros per week, I've got to fill all 18 beds and then some (i.e., make sure that our my frequent flier miles take care of all our air fares...even then, this is out of my range).

(BTW, Tuscany is looking like there are more options and is cheaper, but I will need to convince my nieces that a nice pool and beautiful surroundings can substitute for a nearby beach. Can I also tell them that there are gorgeous Italian men working the vineyards?)

If you want to be on the beach but close to Barcelona , Tossa is it . But it's kind of cheesy . Girona is to far from BAR but a great town . If you are going in the summer I would suggest the Amalfi coast , in particular Maiori , with that kind of group , you'll need a pool & a brace of Vespas .

Wow, Jet! Spectacular place, but it makes the place in Sitges look cheap (although 75 euros a night for food is cheap and maybe I should begin to factor in those costs too!) Amalfi looks gorgeous and is a place we hadn't looked at. It does look like there are big places to rent there too.

What a tough choice...Spain or Italy?

Any Salvador Dali fans in your group? When I travelled to Sitges about 22 years ago a friend & I literally stumbled into his backyard!! He was still alive then & I don't know what became of his house (museum?)

There is a Dali museum somewhere nearby. There are a number of artists in the group, so I'm sure they'll want to visit the museum.

Oops, might have been Cadaques where we came upon this house that had two giant heads on its roof, inclined towards each other. There was no security, nothing, we just walked right up to it.

Cadaqués is one of my favorite places in Europe.
It's just nice and easy and there's great food.
