I keep thinking maybe there's some unknown place in Orange or Newark or Nutley- someplace a bit different that actually has great Indian. Usually go to Montclair but find it just average. |

Oak Tree Rd, which spans Edison and the Iselin section of Woodbridge. Take the Garden State Parkway to exit 131. Turn left off the exit ramp onto Rt 27 north. Take the first left onto Correja Ave. Turn left at the light onto Oak Tree Rd. You are in Iselin, pointed towards Edison. Not only will you find Indian restaurants of many kinds, you'll find Indian dry cleaners, Indian fast food, Indian accountants, Sari shops, spice shops, Indian jewelers, Halal pizza, Halal Chinese food, ...

I can't rave loudly enough about Moghul - the one we go to is on Oak Tree Road in Edison. Oak Tree Road has wonderful restaurants, Indian sweet shops and clothing stores. The food at Moghul is the best I've had (including pricier places in Manhattan). Most patrons are Indian. Service is excellent. You may have a wait on a weekend night, so you should reserve. Enjoy! |

There's Begum Palace, in the Staples shopping center on Route 124 in Madison, and Raagini, on Route 22 East in Mountainside. In my opinion, both would be worth trying to see how you like them. |

Star of India in Kennilworth... a friend of mine called it "the Indian Antonella's" even though my family's been going there regularly long before Antonella's existed, it's a good comparison. It's family owned and run and the food is amazing. |

Another vote for Madison's Begum Palace in the Staples shopping center - great food in an unlikely venue. |

Nooooo! Saffron is awful....they can't even make samosa's properly...thick horrible pastry, yuck! The entrees were very bland and had little taste (we had chicken and lamb dishes.) Food way overpriced compared to most Indian restaurants although the service and decor was nice. Begum Palace (at Staples shopping center at the border of Chatham & Madison) is good if you don't want to go far, otherwise go to Oak Tree Road in Iselin where you have quite a number of choices - it's where there is a large Indian expat population so loads of shops and restaurants to cater to them. For Indian fast food, try 'Chowpatty's'....all vegetarian. |

Disagree re: Saffron; its the best we've found here in well over 8 years of trying (of course, it doesn't approach the best Indian in the city) |

We also like Begum Palace very much. But we also enjoy Palki, which was recommended to us by an Indian acquaintance. It's located in the Marshall's Plaza on Route 10 in East Hanover. |

I think Saffron is the best Indian restaurant in the general area. We've only been there once, but we were the only non-Indian customers in the restaurant on a Saturday night - which leads me to believe that the food is very authentic. Moghul in Morristown is also very good. |

I've found much better Indian food in NJ than in Manhattan--especially the 6th street row of restaurants. In my opinion, Jackson Heights (Queens) and Edison/Iselin (NJ) have the best offerings, though I admit that when I lived in South Orange Raagini on Rte. 22 was where we went most often. Moghul's weekend lunch buffet is fantastic if you have the time to venture out a bit further. |

Saffron and Raagni, both previously mentioned, are our favorities. Both were introduced to us by our Indian neighbors. Saffron has a website from which you can printout takeout coupons. Never actually eaten there. Both Saffron and Raagni are high priced. We also have frequented an Indian restaurant in downtown South Orange. Can't remember the name, but it was always pretty good and very expensive if you didn't have a coupon. Went back recently and found it good. Has a sister restaurant in Berkeley Heights. |

Respectfully disagree with Neelam suggestion unless they're under new management w/ new chef. Swagath Gourmet on Oaktree Road is wonderful. Dine well, all. David |

Saffron for lunch or brunch is the best (served everyday). $9.95 for all you can eat - and it's very good. |

We just had a very nice Indian meal in Jersey City last night at Rasoi on Newark Street (between Tonnele and JFK blvd?). The place was packed with young 20 and 30 somethings indian locals and I felt oddly hip eating there. The food was really quite good. That little stretch of Jersey City is a "little India" and has very inexpensive restaurants (cheapy ones) as well as nicer ones. Rasoi was a bit expensive by NY standards, but normal by NJ standards with entrees between 9 and 13 dollars. I also liked all the authentic Indain sweet shops, bakeries and grocery stores that lined the streets. It was sort of like a condensed version of 6th Street in the city or maybe what Edison was like 15 years ago. Quite cool check it out. |

I have to disagree with the previous pan of Neelam - I adore Indian food but am very picky about it - and I think Neelam is one of the best Indian restaurants I've eaten at (In the top 5). You can also always get a table (which is great) because most of their business is catering. Mmmmm....I think I'll go there tonight... |

Neelam is the one in S. Orange we again went to recently. We've generally found the food consistently good, but we don't get there often because it is a bit of a hike from our part of Short Hills. I had thought in the past the food was exceptionally pricey, including charges for rice, making those coupons virtually a necessity. But our recent visit seemed less expensive -- maybe it is just a perception, but have they reduced prices? |

Just tried Swagath Gourmet (Oak Tree Road in Edison) several days ago and loved it. Not my usual style of Indian, so I needed help ordering, but everything was wonderful. This area, which is full of Indian restaurants, wasn't as far as I thought it would be either. |
