Got a flyer in my mailbox. Beginning tonight, Homestyle Cuisine will be open for take-out dinners. From 5-7pm today, they'll be sampling some of their Caribbean authentic traditional dishes and their famous homestyle BBQ chicken. (The awning says they feature America, Italian, Asian, & Caribbean Food.) It's located at 1733 Springfield Ave, across from the Wyman Ford used car lot with all of the flags. 973-313-0810 (And please if you go early, just leave some food for me!) |

Did anyone go to the tasting event, or for dinner? I've driven by a couple of evenings recently, but they were closed. |

I did stop by, and Anita, who own the restaurant, was very nice and eager to hear feedback. She's a Maplewood resident, so she knows the area well. It wasn't just little pieces of chicken on toothpicks she was giving out, but rather, she packed me a whole container with curry chicken and rice and some other chick pea side dish to go! It was all quite good, and my 18 month-old son who eats nothing but ketchup even dug the rice and side. So we'll definitely be going back. I asked her if she had lunch specials during the week and on weekends, and she said she did. For example, she said they'd just offered eggplant rolatini. I'd be concerned that the place has a little bit of an identity crisis - most of the menu has indian or carribean influences, and then out of the blue, there'll be something italian, or bbq. That may make it a skeptical sell to the average maplewood resident. Mplwdladee - are you connected to Anita in some way, or do you just live nearby? She hasn't been open that long, so i'm just wondering how you've had the opportunity to try it out so many times. |

Plus its nice to see someone start their own business I hope she does well. fyi i had a lot of leftovers from the party, I ate the food for about a week

Ok, what is UP with this place?? I've gone there three times now and it's always been closed. I went this Saturday at 8:00pm and it was closed. I'd really like to try it but I'm starting to lose interest. |

Dunno. I was going to suggest you try calling, but figured i'd call myself first, just to save you some time. It rang, then someone picked up and hung up on me. The interior is very not-restauranty-looking. The night i stopped by, Anita even apologized for the lack of chairs when you walk in, and said it had something to do with Maplewood's rules. With the hours and the decor and the different cuisines with little rhyme or reason, it's almost like they're trying to fail. Or at least not trying very hard to succeed. With this, and (the now vacant) eVineyard down the street, it's not a very encouraging little pocket of SA. |
