Any advice/tips/must see/must avoid info on Curacao? We're going over the Christmas holiday and staying at the Marriott.

Thanks!

I am a diver, so I really enjoyed Curacao. I've often wondered why non-divers go there because it is not a beautiful island (mostly arid and rocky with few sandy beaches), but if you are in a nice resort and enjoy water sports then you can have a great time. The water and reefs are spectacular. I would recommend renting a car and finding the small inlets that have tiny beaches and great snorkeling (or diving). Bring yor lunch. I haven't been there for 7 years so you should probably check on any safety issues with respect to venturing out on your own. Willemstad is an interesting town with some nice restaurants and shops. Have a great time!

We went there 26 years ago for our honeymoon. The hotel we stayed at is now the Marriott. Our friends just got back and had a fabulous time. If you're going for beaches, tennis and golf - forget it. There's a lot of sightseeing. We hired a guide to show us around. We got to see the whole island. Willemstad is fun. If you've been to Amsterdam, it will remind you of it. Don't forget to try the Rishtafel (spelling is way off, but phonetic). It's Indonesian, spicy and great.

Oh good, I was hoping there might be something to do besides laying on the beach. Although I DO plan on doing plenty of sunning & swimming - are you saying that the beaches are just bad?

My memory says, not great beaches. Coarse and rocky. Of course, the hotels could've trucked in finer stuff. Don't misunderstand, it is still very beachy just not fine white stuff like Hawaii or Florida. But, who really cares. Use a chaise.

We traveled there 2 years ago for a family vacation and had a great time. I would definitely rent a car to explore the many beaches and coves mostly on the western side of the island. I would agree with the previous poster that it's not the prettiest (dry and desert-like), but it certainly grew on us. As for activities, there is an aquarium with several hands-on exhibits (the kids loved that), not to mention an interesting historical museum in the city area, plus good restaurants--be sure to find Indonesian rijstafel (?sp). On the eastern, very windblown and rocky side of the island is a park with fabulous cliffs, as well as a cave/cavern where slaves hid. Hope you have a wonderful trip!
