My family (including children) is traveling to Belize over Christmas. I'm curious as to whether anyone who's been there can give me some insight as to which vaccines, etc., we really need, and which we don't. The people who run the hotels say that as tourists (not camping out) we needn't worry at all. The Passport Health people are setting me up to guard against malaria, typhoid, hepatitis A, dengay fever, etc. Not to mention updating tetanus. CDC website is not extremely helpful (or I haven't found the right link). Who do I believe? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed. |

We went last winter- spent 2.5 days inland (rainforest) and 5 days on Ambergris Caye. Awesome trip. Definitely go cave tubing. As for vaccines, we didn't need any special vaccines. We drank bottled water and were fine. Don't get crazy over this- the tourist sites are FINE. Enjoy! |

I have traveled to Belize many times for extended stays inland and would not get any special vaccines for the type of trip you describe. |

We went about a few years ago to Belize & Honduras on a Windjammer sailboat (just 2 months before the large hurricane (forgot the name) that killed many people in the area. In fact the ship we were on sunk with the same Captain we had and 32 other mates.) I know we both had malaria & dengay fever vacines, although they might have included others. Better safe than sorry whould be my motto if I was to go although I have sworn to never go again to a country that requires/suggests taking malaria vaccine. The smell of it reminds you of death & you have to take a lot of pills over a long period of time. Had a great time though |

Thanks, everyone. Hm. . . . still can't decide what to do. Thanks also, Tom, for the link. I'd found the same one, but am frustrated that it is for all of Mexico and Central America. I was hoping for something a bit more Belize-specific than what that list offers. I'm tempted to skip the vaccines/malaria pills, but I'd hate to regret that decision. |

Belize is very small and is, as such, less likely to have literature devoted to it. We went to the Dominican Republic and took our chances without any vaccines. We were fine. But we'd still love you if you decided to get them.
