While I personally no longer inbibe to excess (I've attended occasional temperence meetings since Prohibition), the ongoing MOL sport of bashing the Gaslight Brew Pub in South Orange has sparked in me some measure of curiosity as to where denizens of other NJ locales do their quaffing.

Happily, some answers may be found in the following article from NJ Monthly...

Go in peace.

There's also a great brewpub in New Hope PA - just across the bridge form Lambertville so you can fit in both in one day! The New Hope one overlooks the Steam railway station which is extra entertainment

Used to go to Triumph often when we lived near Princeton, but haven't been back in a while.

Meaning to try Trap Rock again now that our daughter is older (they fall into the no high chairs, no children's menu school of very upscale brewpubs).

Tried the much-ballyhooed Egan & Sons in Montclair a few weeks ago, and am sorry to say that we probably won't be returning. I had really wanted to love it.

Egan has a nice decor. Decent beer (even if only the later stages of brewing were done onsite), adequate food (but St. James Gate is better), wonderful chocolate bread pudding. But it was astoundingly noisy. Worse, the waiter thought that I had ordered "chips" as my dinner, and didn't come back to check until we flagged him down 10-15 minutes later. Finally brought the "fish and chips" that I had actually ordered. Had the gall to charge us for the extra (uneaten) order of chips on the bill. Yeah, right.

My apologies to St. James Gate -- we won't be straying again for the Irish Pub portion of our dining.

Also went back to Gordon Biersch during a recent west coast trip -- the beer is still good, but they've gutted the formerly very interesting menu, and replaced it with more generic food (Benniganized it!). So the chain is growing, but we care less.

Still taking nominations for places worth trying when we want to try again!

Come to lovely Ship Inn in Milford. Take 78 West to Phillipsburg exit to 22 west to 519 south to Milford. Turn right at traffic light. Park in church lot or on street. (It's a quiet town.)
Take a walk to the Delaware Bridge, a block from the Inn, after dinner.

The Long Valley Brewpub (in Long Valley) is another good option. The food is decent, but they do have some good beers. The brewpub is housed in an old stone barn and in the summer they have a large patio outside. If you're in the mood for a nice country drive, check it out.

I often wonder why, if we're not supposed to drink and drive, bars have parking lots!
