I am trying to get away for MLK Day using Continental mile. Any suggestion in the Charleston or Savannah areas? Looking for somewhere to spend a long weekend and maybe catch some sporting event or concert or something with a six year old boy. Knicks are in Toronto -- would that be too lame in January? Anyone have any neat places to see around Charleston? Historic sites or cool nature reserves? Any suggestions for a city to go to on MLK weekend, which would only require 25,000 miles and have some sort of event to attend ... |

Won't 25,000 miles get you anywhere in the Continental US on CO? Of course, there is also the issue of how much time you want to spend in airplanes and airports out of a 3-day weekend as well as what routes actually have any award seats remaining. The latter has always been my frustration. I'm planning a trip for this coming summer and the dates have only just settled into place in the last couple of weeks due to family reunion scheduling not under my control. However, the award seats to the possible destination airports (Albuquerque, El Paso, Denver) were all gone, for the entire summer, by last June. Maybe these are "hot" destinations in more ways than on the thermometer, but I'm not sure why. Of course there are still lots of seats on those flights ... just not for frequent flyer miles. I hope you have better success and find a great get-away that works! The other possibility is to check the weekend specials that come out just during the week prior, almost every week. I get them emailed to me, via a registration on the CO website. There often seem to be deals for the area you mention - i.e. the Carolinas, etc. In fact, I seem to recall seeing those destinations much more often than Texas and other destinations that are on my "frequent travel" list. When those specials come up, they tend to be on the order of a low price (under $100) plus some number of miles, rather than miles only, but they usually look pretty good. I assume that each week's specials are determined by which routes have surplus seats available as of a week or so ahead. |

Check this out: www.magnoliaplantation.com This is a really great place just outside the city of Charleston, but you'd probably need a car to get there. When we were there we saw lots of alligators. Charleston also has a really nice new aquarium that my kids loved, that's inside the city, so you wouldn't need a car. There's lots of things to do on a long weekend in Charleston, although I don't know about sporting events. Check out this site: www.charleston.com Savannah is also a really great little city, although I have less specific information on stuff to do there with a kid, but I'm sure there's got to be plenty. One thing I really loved was a visit to Bonaventure Cemetary, "the most famous cemetery in Savannah Georgia. Set on a bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, one of the most scenic places in the USA." Did a search for sites for Savannah, and this seemed to be one of the better ones: www.officialsavannahguide.com Both cities have great buggy tours. |

Was in Charleston in September and loved it. We stayed at Charleston Place which as an indoor/outdoor pool, spa etc. We did the horse carriage tour which is a lot of fun, went to a plantation (which pretty much takes up a day). It's a lovely city to walk around. Toronto would also be fun - colder for sure but hockey games, ice skating, CN tower etc can make for a busy weekend. |
