Took my fashion-conscious daughter and her friends to Soho yesterday, and while they prowled around the Sephora megastore I snuck across the street to see what D&D had.

Wilted, browning-around-the-edges produce -- and mislabeled at that. And the seafood counter was a scandal. Two deceased lobsters sitting on ice with a sign, "Holiday Special -- Live Lobsters $19.98/lb."

Well there's a sucker born every minute, I guess.

A few years ago when I lived in the city, a freind of mine had her parents visit from Germany. They wanted to know where to pick up some groceries and she (being new to the city) told them D&D. They said they knew that NY was expensive, but they had no idea it would be SO expensive! Still makes me laugh to think of doing basic grocery shopping there.

More than ten years ago I bought smoked trout there that was totally moldy on the inside. Never bought anything from the charcuterie counter again.

Back when I lived near there after five pm all the produce was half price. I wonder if that's still the case?
