My husband and I have been trying to find a place that makes a really good hamburger. Something similar to what you'd get at Corner Bistro in the city. Or Don's... remember Don's on South Orange Ave in Livingston? They were around years ago when I was a kid.

Where do you go for a great burger? Thanks!

Gaffers in West Orange has a great burger! Ask for the seasoned fries (well worth the extra buck)!

Yeah, I remember Don's -- they had the best burgers, and there's no place exactly like them. I still miss their burgers!

I think Charlie Brown's has one of the better burgers locally.

I've enjoyed burgers at the Pub, but for whatever reason they never seem to have A-1 which is my preferred burger condiment. As a result I never order a burger there anymore. It actually kept me away for a while, until I discovered the other portions of their menu. The roasted chicken, the seared salmon special, mmmm. It's probably just as well, because I've never been to a restaurant that makes a burger better than the one I can make for myself.

Verjus. The burger's only on the weekday lunch menu. Charlie grinds his own meat and puts the burger with excellent cubed fried potatoes.

I believe that Arthur's Tavern won some awards last year as the best place for burgers. There are 4 of them; located in Morris Plains, Hoboken, Emerson, and North Brunswick. However, all of these locations are a little hike from here.

Kings...buy the ground meat 15% fat and cook it at home! Unfortunately there is not a single place that serves a real hamburger and how simple it would be to do.

You can get Dons hotdogs, hamburgers and turkey burgers at Livingston Bagel on Northfield (just east of Livingston Ave). Nana's Deli also in Livingston carries Dons hotdogs.

Gaffers, Pals, Ritz Diner in Livingston and Syds at the Millburn mall. These are some of the best around. I love a good medium rare burger.

Pal's
Beacon Tavern or Pub in Summit (cant remember the name)
Trap Rock Brewery

the Verjus option sounds compelling.

If you've got a Hankering, the Verjus burger is surprisingly good for a white table cloth place, without the price ($8.95) getting into Daniel Boulud, or even Del Frisco's, territory.

I haven't been to the Blue Moon diner in a loooooooong time because I always found it to be dirty, but with limited time and foul weather on Monday I wandered in there and ordered a burger. I was expecting the usual diner burger, but this one was big and juicy and flavorful, especially with the sauteed onions. I was very surprised. The french fries were overcooked however and the place is grimey so I won't be rushing back, but I really did enjoy that burger.

I have to second Jay's on Springfield Avenue...not a lot of atmosphere...but a real honest to goodness hamburger!! We went once when I happened to get their menu stuck in my mailbox and then happened to be at that part of Springfield to pick up something...was very pleased with that hambuger and have gone back again....

Pal's makes a great burger. I have also enjoyed them quite a bit at Tierney's Pub in Montclair. It's a great experience -- not upscale like our pub, but delicious. Worth checking out. Definitely get the onion rings on the side.

If you're in the city try Big Nicks. 70's and B'way. One of the very best I've ever had.

Red Robin serves a great burger with unlimited steak fries! Prices are very reasonable for what you get. Also the food seems to get to you fast which is always good when you need your burger. :-)

They're located on Route 3 East in Clifton.

See their menu at: www.redrobin.com

Jay's on Springfield Avenue is many things: unpretentious, friendly, unassuming, and makes good burgers, as others have already indicated.

For the "healthier" set (who may believe in the virtues of the turkey burger), Jay's serves a damn good turkey burger as well.

Not quite the same, but try the specialty burgers at the Parkwood. The greek burger and the cajun burger are great.

My only complaint is that they are all 1/2 pound and who needs to eat that much. However, buy it and split it in half and you got a home run.

What?! Let me assure you that Fudd's could never go under. No chance. And they have great burgers.

In town, I really like the blue cheese burger at the Pub.

I second Pal's, Pub is good too but ask for "chips" as they are far better than the "fries" that are the default.

In PA burgers are, by law, well done. You cannot order, legally, a medium rare or, god forbid, a rare burger. Maybe "medium" but, in any case, no pink allowed inside.

Went to AppleBees at Livingston Mall on Christmas Eve w/ my kids and was really psyched for a burger but PRINTED ON MENU was "only well done", I believe with a specified temperature. Escalated to manager and was told, "yep, you can't have a burger medium rare, sorry, company policy." I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN AN APPLEBEES AGAIN!!!

Eat well, all.

david - I also am on an Applebee's boycott for the same reason. I asked for it rare and the waiter told me they woudn't do it. I pleaded with him, and he said he would do what he could. But when the burger came out, it was a hockey puck. Oh well, company policy, not the waiters fault.

I complained about this to a friend, and their response made me think. They said, "That tells you a lot about the meat they use."
I guess that is true. There must be a good reason that they have to burn them to a crisp before they can be eaten without making you sick.

Make the trek to Pals Cabin in West Orange. They've been charbroiling there since 1932 and their burgers and steaks are GRRRRRRRRREAT!!!!! A lot of "old timers" go there but I like the nostalgic retro decor and items they still have. You can sit at the counter or dine at a table. It's worth the trip!

Eating in Applebee's is the gastronomic equivalent of having your fingernails pulled out 2 x 2. IMHO.

I recently met an old friend at Pal's for lunch and we both had their bleu cheese burger...outstanding! So big that I cut it in half and Mr. BGS had it for supper....(so big was my half that I did not even eat supper that night). We opted for onion rings and they are the real deal!!! With a cold beer it was a great lunch...

Although I usually like Fuddruckers very much, the Route 22 location was never up to their standards. Their burgers were way too greasy. Hopefully that is not the case with the other locations.
