Has anyone been there recently? I used to go quite frequently and really enjoyed it, but then I couldn't keep track of when it was open/closed and a couple of times I called and they were open but they were catering a party and told me I'd have to wait a couple of hours for food. Anyway, it just fell out of my rotation but I miss it.

Funny ... same thing happened to me ... recently I found myself dreaming about their ribs so we called for take out (I believe it was during Christmas week) - and they weren't doing take out due to their catering business and preparing for New Year's. I will try again this coming week.

it's a shame that they don't expand into a real restaurant with consistent hours. My guess is that Jesse wants to keep it a completely family-run business, but that won't allow him to expand. I hope he is doing well, but I think it's a shame for the rest of us that we are deprived of his delicious food when we have a hankerin' for it.

yes thanks, but on any one of the "OPEN" nights they may still bump you if they have a catering gig

SOSully -- it's all about the $$$

My wife called last night (Thursday) to place an order and Jesse said that he wasn't cooking. He said that the catering type jobs are what is keeping his head above the water. He doesn't get enough daily traffic to always open shop. He only purchases fresh food and hates to have to throw it out if it does not sell. Everything is fresh, and he refuses to serve pre-made leftovers or food that has been frozen.

I believe that he said he will be open tonight, Friday.

It would be a shame to lose what I think is one of the top places to get food from in the area. Jesse is a great cook as well as a great guy. He's very passionate about his food. Once you have a conversation with him, you'll see what I mean.

Oh I have spoken with him a few times, but I believe his problem with take-out is that he has inconsistent availability and his location is not very good. I think he would do much better in a better location and if he had a real restaurant. Anyway, I'm just dreaming

After I (and others) wrote on here that it was confusing knowing when the restaurant was open, and suggesting he keep his Web site updated with hours and the daily menu, I got a nasty note from him telling me that he knew a lot more about running a restaurant than I do (which is certainly true) and that he had all the customers he needed.

I sincerely wish him the best of luck. I haven't been in there since.

cmonty - For anyone who isn't a regular follower of your posts on this message board, most probably don't know to read into your sarcasm - which can easily be misinterpreted.

SOSully, I agree with you. His location is subpar. I don't know how any of the businesses in that stip mall except for Domino's pizza - which is a delivery franchise stay in business. Same goes for Caribbean Cuisine around the corner - another place for great food.

Inconsistency of the menu was one of my peeves. For a while, they were sending out the daily menu choices via email. I have not gotten an email in a long time. The emails actually served as a reminder for me to eat there more often.

IMHO, Jesse could use a business partner to open a restaurant in a better location, and let them run business side of things so he can concetrate on what he does best, the food and catering.

His mustard BBQ salmon is one of the best fish dishes I've ever had.

(No sarcasm.)

Is this a sit-down restaurant, or take-out only? This is the most mysterious food joint I've ever encountered.

I've tried it and the food was good, but I'm another person who never knows when he'll be open and when he's not, or what he'll be serving, so i've just given up on it. Now when i see posts with the words heart and soul in the title, i just roll my eyes. There are proven ways to run a business - be a restaurant or be a caterer, or be a restaurant that caters. Jesse sounds like he's creating his own hybrid, and decides what to be based on what engagements he has booked or what he has in the fridge. That's fine for him, and if he's happy with it, great. But somehow, other business are able to juggle having consistent hours and using quality ingredients, and i've found it a lot easier to give my business to them. Getting a good meal shouldn't be so hard.

Um, I guess I won't feel so bad that I haven't gotten organized and tried him yet.

I'll happily continue to give my business to Niecy's, which has food we enjoy, a nice dining room, and predictable hours.

If Jesse ever decides to run a predictable restaurant, I'll go back to trying to get there! Meanwhile, I wish him the best of luck with the catering.

Just for the record, I'll take the inconsistent hours of H&S over the superconsistent bleh food at Niecy's.

I went on Saturday for the ribs and stayed for the sweet potato pie - both were outstanding. Jesse hung out with us for a while and said he will be changing things up a bit so that he'll have a menu of staples that people ask for consistently (like ribs) along w/a few specials rather than changing the menu constantly.

That sounds PERFECT for me who is vegetarian. I (do eat fish though) so maybe now I'll be able to eat something other than side dishes and the catfish all the time.
