Hello Folks...

Any suggestions on where to stay in Washington for a long weekend trip with kids? Any good deals close to places we ought to visit or close to transportation (since we wont be hanging out in the room all that much, swanky isnt important...but a pool or other kid-friendly amenities might be nice although not required)? Thanks in advance...

Hank --

Can't go wrong with the Hotel Monaco.

Walking distance to the Mall. Not too expensive. Lots of restaurants nearby. You even get a goldfish in the room for the kids. Plus, free wine every evening in the lobby.

A great place.

We go every year and stay at the Embassy Suites on M Street, somewhere around 21 or 22nd St. They have an indoor pool - and you can't beat staying with kids in a suite so that they can hit the hay and you can leave the lights on.

There's nothign particular going on that street, but you are a nice walk to both Dupont Circle and Georgetown. Foggy Bottom metro isn't too far in terms of getting to the mall and all that.

We go to DC often and I usually do the Priceline thing and get a cheap hotel. They're all the usual chains (Marriott Express, etc) and we've occasioanlly stayed in some really fancy ones. And I usually start the bidding around $60 so that's pretty good.

I run conferences in DC all the time so I know several of the hotels well. And I have to agree, the Omni Shoreham is one of the best deals in town. It's a beautiful historic hotel, with nice big rooms, great rates, right by Woodly Park, and many good dining options nearby. There's a Metro stop accross the street, but you might want to consider driving if you plan on hitting many of the sights.

Have fun!

Love the Omni Shoreham - have stayed there several times, using Priceline and Hotwire to get rooms for <$100. (This may not work when you need to accomodate an entire family, tho.) But the location is great, and it's walking distance to the National Zoo.

We liked the River Inn in Foggy Bottom. We could walk to the Smithsonian and it wasn't too expensive. We stayed there on two Thanksgiving vacations with our boys when they were kids.

We stayed a couple of times at the State Plaza, in Foggy Bottom, and liked it a lot. The rooms were apartment-style suites with separate bedrooms, for a little privacy, and an efficiency kitchen, handy for giving the kids a quick bowl of cereal for breakfast instead of an expensive hotel meal.
