we rcvd a bread maker as a gift about 7 years ago & used it quite a bit in the beginning. we haven't in a while & would like to. i haven't seen those SUPER EASY packets that you just dump into the bread maker & 4 hrs later, you have a loaf of bread. do they still make them? |

They're near flour at the supermarket and at Williams-Sonoma, etc. They're more expensive than buying bread. |

They have them in the King Arthur catalog, but they really are more expensive than buying bread. They've got some at Whole Foods as well. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/ |

Williams-Sonoma has incredible bread mixes. I haven't bought them in a while (I haven't used my breadmaker as much as I used to either), but I'm sure they still sell them. |

ok, so i bought a couple at williams-sonoma. it doesn't say just dump it in your breadmaker (like i hoped & like i was used to.) i'm the FARTHEST thing from a baker. the directions tell you to mix all ingredients in bowl & then put in pan to bake. how long does that mean i put it in the breadmaker for? |

I think what I did was chose the medium setting on the breadmaker and that automatically sets how much time it goes for (I figured medium was the safest bet). The other thing is that I did whatever my breadmaker manual advised about the order in which you put liquids and solids into the breadmaker (I didn't mix anything in a bowl first) -- one goes before the other, but I can't remember which now. I think you put it's solids then liquids then yeast on top, but I can't remember off hand. I can look when I get home if you need... |

If you can measure ingredients accurately, you can make good white bread. 3c flour 1-1/4c water 1t salt 1T butter 1T sugar 1t yeast One slight improvement is to put an egg in the measuring cup before you put the water in. Then fill the cup with water until the liquid level reaches 1-1/4 cups.

tom, you can't give a recipe without saying how long to bake it :-) |

My assumption is that you'd let the bread machine handle the times. But this is what my previous bread machine did on a medium cycle. I don't know what my current machine does. 20 minutes kneading 1 hour rise 2 minutes kneading (for punchdown) 40 minutes rise (not sure about this time) 50 minutes baking Or something like that.

I checked - the order to put things into the bread maker is solid (the mix) then the liquids then yeast (some breadmakers have a separate yeast compartment but mine doesn't). |

That's what the instructions say, but I have experimented and found that it makes no difference!
