Last Friday, Mr. Amandacat & I had to schlepp all the way to Montclair (almost an hour round trip including the time it took to order and get our food) to satisfy our falafel/babaganouj/schwarama craving. I keep thinking there must be some place more convenient for middle eastern takeout, but if there is I haven't been lucky enough to stumble on it yet. Any suggestions? Please?

There are a couple of places in Livingston that might do the trick, at least for non-meat items. Jerusalem West has awesome middle-eastern salads. It's at 99-101 Mt. Pleasant Ave. I've never been to Moshavi, which is on Livingston Ave., but I imagine it might also have felafel and such. |

In a bind, I thought the falafel at the "Village Coffee Shop" in Maplewood was pretty good. |

I assume the Livingston places are Kosher? Which means they wouldn't have done us much good on Friday, anyway. Still, they sound worth a try, thanks. I like the Coffee Shop's falafel, too, but I was hoping for someplace with a wider middle eastern menu: falafel, hummus, babaganouj, tabouleh, dolmades, etc. And meat! Where to get schwarama, people? |

Yes, indeed. Kosher and closed on Shabbat. Jerusalem West has a great selection of eggplant salads and all those items that you just listed. Can't help you in the schwarama department, but maybe someone else can - I'm developing a hankering myself just thinking about it. edited to add: I just did a Google search on Mid-Eastern Restaurants in Paterson and came up with this one: King Shawarma 899 Main Street Paterson, NJ 07503-2693 Phone: 973-977-8811 Here's their website And don't forget about the Afghan restaurant in South Orange. They may have something very similar.

The Greek Store in Kenilworth offers prepared foods for take-out (not a restaurant, though). Take Rt. 22 east and turn right onto Michigan Avenue. When you get to the main Kenilworth intersection (can't remember the name), turn right. The Greek Store is a little bit ahead on your right. |

There are tons of Middle Eastern eateries and shops on S. Main Street in Patterson - sort of like an Arabic/Turkish version of the Ironbound. Oh, I had a lovely kebab at the (Turkish) Bosphorous Restaurant #2 on 409 E. Main in Denville; not really very close either. Not impressed with the places in Livingston, which are also expensive for what you get. Otherwise, I would love if there were other choices closer to SO. Cheers, Joe Moryl

Does the Greek Store make sandwiches, or do you just buy the various prepared foods in little take out containers and then assemble them at home yourself? If it's the latter, that sounds like a lot of work. I'm a big fan of Mazar, but meat is only one part of the equation. I need the various tahini & eggplant &/or chickpea purees too, the crispy falafel balls, even the odd spinach pie here or there. Paterson sounds cool for a day trip, but not quite what I think of when I think of a quick takeout dinner That's it! My husband and I, the goyishest western european(Irish, French, German, Spanish, Italian)americans you can find , are left with no choice -- obviously, we have to open a classic falafel joint in M/SO. Anything you want in a pita. If we don't do it, who will?

Of course, anyone else on this board should feel free to steal my million-dollar idea. "Bob & Kristin's Falafel Hut" doesn't quite trip off the tongue . . . |

We'd LOVE that. I always tell them at the Maple Leaf they need to do felafel. Instead I had to make a vegetarian version of the gyro—veggie burger instead of gyro meat. It works in a pinch, but it ain't no felafel! |

Probably true, however if you named your place Crispy Falafel Balls you would get loads of people coming by just to see what's on the menu |

Ali Baba in Hoboken is awfully tasty, I really like that Middle Eastern place next to the Olive Tree(?) in the West village in NYC - Mamoun's I think it's called. I forgot which street it's on, near where the Village Gate used to be. It's a teensy take-out place with a few little tables but the food is so yummy. It's not close but it's worth stopping in if you're nearby. |

Ahhh, Mamoun's. Memories from my NYU days. (Actually, I always wanted to go to "nicer" places, but when my boyfriend came in to visit we HAD to go there.) |

Mamoun's is on McDougal, if I remember from my own NYU days, and it's great. Another place to check out in the city is Hoomoos Asli on Kenmare St. |

We do the trip to Beyond Pita in Montclair. I love them, they are so nice and have such yummy sanwiches. It's worth the trip! Nothing better than their chicken kabob sandwich. |

Beyond Pita is where we went last week; I agree it is delicious, but for some reason their schawarama (am I spelling that even remotely correctly?) is made with chicken rather than the traditional lamb -- tasty, but not quite the same. And then there's the schlepp factor . . . Anyone here ever lived in Jersey City? There's a great mid eastern place on Grove Street, called Ibby's, that I used to eat at at least once a week. Delicious! Ibby had some sort of relationship to the Mamouns in the village -- I think they were cousins or something -- and both have very similar quality food. Fantastic (lamb) schwarama. Mmmm, Ibby's . . . |

I have never had lamb scwerma -- then again, I don't like lamb (at all!) The trick is drive to beyond pita, order, take a quick walk down church street and back, pick up your food and drive home really fast. The worst was the time we ordered our food and took a short drive AND MY HUSBAND GOT US LOST -- we ended up near the Parkway in Nutly! You can just imagine the anger. |

Try Iraq. All you have to do is sign up for the Armed Forces, you can support your country while trying to eat some cool food. Just remember to duck once in a while.... |

Ok, you probably won't like it 'cause Montclair's a trek to you... but Rectangles on 2nd ave (right across from the 2nd ave deli) is SOOOOO good!! It's yemenite and something else.... SOOOOO GOOOOD. They have most of what you listed. I don't pay attention to the meat items though, as I'm a vegetarian. I've eaten there when I wasn't though, and their Shnitzel is so good... with their arugala dressing :::drools::: Good night nurse! |

I hereby promise to eat once a week for the rest of my life at Lashish/SO-Maplewood, if someone would just open a franchise here. http://www.lashish.com/ |
