South Orange Productions is again sponsoring this year’s South Orange Illumination-2003 on New Year’s Eve. Last year, 4000 luminaries (white safety bags filled with sand and a special candle) lined the streets and the perimeter of Flood's Hill. It was the first year of what hopes to be a spectacular tradition in South Orange. Throughout the first few weeks of December, Block Captains will distribute fliers/order forms to South Orange residents. If you would like to be a Block Captain for your street or volunteer for another function, please contact: Patty Brown-Christenson bcgang5@aol.com 973-378-7906 It is relatively easy, a great opportunity to get the whole family involved and a nice way to stay in touch with your neighbors over the winter months! Come . . . Be a part of the Tradition! For further information, go to www.southorange.org and click on the South Orange Illumination-2003 link.

Now, see, we in South Orange do this cool thing where we all light up our little corner of the world on New Year's Eve. Watch for the streets of SO to be glowing gently in 2003/4, with more and more streets lit up each year to come. (It's all part of our fundamental superiority to Maplewood.)

Last year, kids who helped were filled with a sense of accomplishment. It is a way of feeding them on civic duty without the groans which usually accompany that conversation. Flood's Hill looked great and the streets which particpated looked all decked out. I hope this year is even more successful. And...my wife is block captain so anyone on Hoskier who hasn't signed up, you know what to do. Patrick |

Just wanted to throw in my two cents here. I remember when South Orange Illumination was simply known as Village A Glow where bags of candles circled the duck pond on Christmas night, not even sure if they still do that. However, the new New Years Eve Illumination is indeed a wonderful experience and one that every resident should make an effort to participate in, it justs make the holiday season that must more enjoyable. |

Village Aglow still exists and the candles are still lit around the pond. There is also a great fireworks show and Santa Claus gives a gift to each child that attends. There was also free Hot chocolate. Unfortunately I guess a lot of people did not make it this year because of the weather (12/14/03).

Yes, Village Aglow is a beautiful display of lights around the duck pond . . . it is not to be missed!!! And of course, the fireworks are spectacular reflecting off of the pond! South Orange Illumination-2003 is sponsored by South Orange Productions, a not-for-profit organization, currently working to complete a professional, full-length video about our town’s past, present and future. ** If you have not received a flyer in your home mailbox, but would like to purchase luminaries for your home. Simply come down to the Baird Center-Teen Center (the building to the left) on Sunday, December 21st or 28th, between 11:00 – 3:00 and you can purchase them directly.

We went there at 4PM, and at 5:15 there was still nothing going on. Santa arrived on a fire truck at 4, but there were no kids. Did this thing ever get off the ground? None of the sand-bag lights were lit when we left at 5:25, and there were only about a dozen people there. |

We drove around last eve and were enchanted by the luminaries on Flood's Hill and surrounding streets, it was magical! Then we followed the trail of glowing lights back through Montrose Park to our home - can't wait to do it next year, and get our little cul de sac block on board too! Thanks to all who make this new tradition possible - it is indeed a very special and unique community event. (As transplanted Manhattanites and newcomers to the area we appreciate the community unity aspect alot. Cheers to the organizers all! |

I hope I don't sound like some kind of an "ingrate", but while seeing the sand candles is nice, is there any kind of activity there? I know I heard fireworks around 7PM, but I'm not sure if they came from that site. Even having some of the First Night activities in the Middle School would have been a nice way for people to see the luminaries. |

First Night Activities alternate between Maplewood and South Orange. It makes a little more sense to do the illuminaries during the years that the sctivities are in S.O., but either way, I thought they were lovely. NCJ aka LibraryLady On a coffee break..or something like it.
