I need to make last minute reservations for my birthday dinner this Saturday. I've searched the archives and have a few places, but some of the recommendations are kind of old.
So, with that in mind, sushi connoiseurs...
It'll be me and my man, and that big dish of raw fish between us, some sake, some Japanese beer...you get the drift...

That would be Tomoe Sushi on Thompson and I would recommend it over Sushi Samba (which is more abt atmosphere than sushi). Tomoe is wonderful.

Blue ribbon is the best. They don't take reservations so stop by, give them your cell # and go grab a drink down the street. Best sushi in the city by my vote. You always can walk into Nobu. Sit @ the sushi bar. Great cooked dishes but I like Blue Ribbon for the fish.

Tomoe is great, and not $$$ - I haven't been to Blue Ribbon.

The most amazing piece of fish I've EVER had
was at Nobu Next Door. The black cod was something else!
If this is a night to splurge - go and get one of their prix fix menus. I took my husband for his birthday and we had a great night (the watermelon martinis were delicious, too.)

My boss goes to Neo on the Upper West Side -- I assume it's rather pricey.

Nëo Sushi
23
17
18
$55
West 80s
2298 Broadway (83rd St.) New York, NY, 10024 (212) 769-1003
The “next best thing to Nobu” for Upper Westsiders, this “cute” Japanese “reaches new heights” with “exquisite, unusual” sushi that seems “priced by the carat”; still, devotees with “deep pockets” insist it’s “worth the cost.”

Japonica on 12th and University. A little pricey but the pieces are double the size of sushi I have eaten anywhere. Really fresh and they have some adventurous stuff.

Stay away from places that serve large pieces of Sushi. Sushi should be served in bite sized pieces on top of rice that is loosely packed (many not-so-good Sushi restaurants serve tightly packed rice. You are missing out on so much flavor that way!)

Sushi Yasuda on 43rd is among the very best in the city. Their eel is among the best in the US. Other than that, for a real and very authentic experience, try Donguri on the upper east side. Very small. Very authentic. It would be a wonderful birthday experience.

Happy Birthday Hank Zona! Hope you have a great day/night as well.

I think we're going to try Nobu Next Door and if that doesn't work head over to Thompson/Sullivan area. It'll bring back memories...

Anyone been to ISO? Just doing some more research and after checking out chowhounds.com I saw it got great reviews and it's closing next week! Doesn't sound as upscale as the others, but it's got a Keith Haring influenced dining room, which might make me have to go there.

Went to Blue Ribbon on Sullivan. Luckily we had the address or I never would have found the place. We showed up for an early dinner at 5pm, walked right in and were seated immediately. We had the Chef's choice platter, everything was so fresh and the atmosphere was perfect for a quiet dinner for two. The waiter even surprised us with complimentary green tea creme brulee as a birthday treat. Thanks for the recommendation!

Maybe that's the good thing about my birthday being on a Tuesday, I'm STILL celebrating me. Hope you celebrated yours in a good way too.

While this is too late, I LOVE sushi. Have it at least once a week. I've been to 2 of the Yama locations about 5-6 times, Nobu once, Blue Ribbon once, and Sushi Samba once. I've been to at least 15 others that I can't recall the name or just walked by and tried. There's an all you can eat place called Yuka on 2nd ave, between 80th & 81th that serves decent Sushi, but ALL You can eat @ $18.95 is hard to beat. All these places that I mentioned are EXCELLENT. My former favorite was Yama, until I tired my current favorite in NYC. Its TOMOE on Sullivan. Unfortunately this place takes no reservations, has a line that lasts about an hour and a half during dinner, and features less elbow room than a typical jail cell. However, when you sit down and bite into that buttery soft sushi you'll find it was all worth it. Insiders hint: go for lunch and get there at 12:45. This is 15 minutes before it opens. Get there at 1:00 and you will be wating an hour as the whole restaurant fills up and you have to wait for people to leave.
