Our fireplace isn't working just right - the flu is open but it still really smells when a fire is burning. Not smokey but the air makes our eyes burn and it just smells more than it should. Someone suggested that I get the chimney inspected, since it's already been cleaned and we still have the same problem. Anyone recommend a chimney inspector? Thanks in advance.

By the same token, I need some chimney repair done in the spring. When I bought my house I was told it would need some repointing and other minor repairs done soon. I am a little nervous about chimney people because there are so many ripoff artists out there....anyone know a good reputable chimney repair person? thanks.

I would think that the guys who cleaned your chimney could inspect it also.

Sounds like (eln) you have a draft problem ... the other point worth pondering is did someone paint the inside of the fireplace ?

If you're getting fumes smoke smell in the house, your draft isn't happening.

Chimney caps can help this, also look for trees blocking natural draft, chimney height from roofline ... lots of things possible . . . I'd call the people who last cleaned your chimney and talk to them. . . if you liked them then thier recommendation if they can't do it would be how I would proceed. Usually a contractor you like will only refer someone he trusts to his own clients.

I had a pretty good experience with Chimney's Unlimited, based on a recommendation on this board two or three years ago. I think that the guy there was named John and it was in West Orange (?) Post back if this isn't enough info to go on and I'll see if I can dig up the phone number, etc.
