When we turn on the tap in the upstairs bathroom there is a loud banging noise somewhere in the depths of the house. Does anyone know what thats all about? It only seems to happen with the sink tap not the bath...??!!

Thanks

Usually, the banging happens when the water is turned-off. You are hearing a water-hammer. When you shut-off the water, something has to happen to the momentum of the moving water. If your pipes aren't anchored properly, they can bang around in the walls. A plumber may be able to attach a device to the water pipe that provides an air cushion and will stop the banging.

My bet is with a loose pipe. While easy to anchor, for some reason few plumbers do.

Have someone go into the depths of the house while you work the water. Locate the area by sound, and if in the open look for movement. If that fails, grab a pipe or two to see if you can stop it. If so put a pipe strap on in that area. If the noise is in the wall, well then you have to open the wall.

This does not sound like water hammer to me.

If it happens when you turn the water on, it is likely to be a faulty valve somewhere along the line.
A broken gate, loose washer, wandering retainer screw or piece of solder can be slamming into an elbow or anything else downstream.

Finding the problem will take at least two people.
Good luck.
